Numerous' Opportunities Offered to a Bright' Young Man With Good Trade. Jacksonville. Jacksonville now has its live militia I'oiiiimnii'H, and Is look ing forward to the now armory build Ihk, but tho latest thins out is the plan which is uhIhb laid for the or ganization of a naval militia company, and the future of such depends en tirely upon the young men of this city, Capt. J. II. Ulaud, Governor Tram- mull's seen tary of the navy for Flor ida, Is quite willing to help organize the young men, and is going out of his way to do so. llefore the Spanish-American war, Jacksonville had a marine organiza tion here, being the third division of four companies of the slate. The old battalion of four divisions was scat tered over the state, the first at Port Tampa, the second at Tampa, the third in this city, anil the fourth was quar tered at rensacola. During the Spanish-American war, the companies were put into service along the coast, and after the war they had quarters in the old armory. The fire of 1900 burned the armory, and the boys lost all of their equip ment and the organization slowly went to pieces. The old battleship "Wask" which they had was taken back by the government. Florida has a line sea coast for a naval militia, and as Miami now has two companies and the torpedo boat "McKenzie," he thinks that Jackson ville would make a very advantageous station. The opportunities for the young men are numerous, as the navy wants men of all trades, and no man could lose by having trained in the naval militia. It is one thing to make soda crackers that are occasionally good. It is quite another thing to make them so that they are always better than all other soda crackers, always of un varying goodness. The name "Uneeda" stamped on every biscuit means that if a million packages of Uneeda Biscuit were placed before you, you could choose any one of them, confident that every soda cracker in that package would be as good as the best Uneeda Biscuit ever baked. Mann- ville, Keuka and other points in that section or the county are organizing for an orthodox observance of Road- work Day on lines laid down in the proclamation of Governor Park Tram mell. This week the people are organizing for the real work which will bo per formed on the 21st Inst. The ladies in all that section will prepare dinner for the workers, and it will be a jolly picnic affair with all neighbors taking a hand in a needed community improvement. J. H. Wylie of Interlachen, who was in the city on Wednesday, stated that all have agreed that the road most needing attention is the small piece of deep sand road connecting Inter lachen and Keuka. This will be grad ed and hard-surfaced with gravel. And the work it is hoped can all be completed on this one day. How many other sectons of the county are preparing to get together for a community day's work on the 21st inst.? A Night of Terror. Few nights are more terrible than that of a mother looking on her child jhoking and gasping for breath dur ing an attack of croup, and nothing in thai house to relieve it. The big Sautelle Shows, combined with menagerie and hippodrome, which will give exhibits in Palatka November 22nd, on the crcus grounds opposte the Unon depot, has four dis tinctive and important departments circus, menagerie, hippodrome and wild west. Descriptions of these will be given in their places. Chiefest of these, perhaps, is the circus. Back to Norp's days the circus dates. That finnicky-strenuous monarch originat ed feats in the ring, as well as "sports of the arena," which were first cousins to the former. He it was that inducted bareback riding though it is probable that they used "pads" in those days. He certainly was the father of chariot racing, these he enhanced in inter est by utilizing Christians as human torches, at times. With the Sig. Sautelle 9-Big-Shows are several ot the most skilled, grace ful and daring bareback riders of this or any other age. Chiefest is Oscar Lowande. This intrepid ar tist is the very Centaur of riders His astounding 'feats on bridleless horse, are the acme of daring, and recklessness. Also the poetry of graceful motion. His somersaulting from the back of one to the back of another horse in the rear stands alone as the star horse feature of the century. The act is a rare combination of daring, skill and agility. Also calculation. The missing of a single inch in such evoluton would mean death, or maim ing. One scarcely wonders why the Announcer demands perfect quiet un der canvas while this great feat is being performed. Heartburn is a symptom of indiges tion. Fairs. One of the movements in Forida which The Metropolis has observed with genuine interest, is that being made for more county lairs in wie State. Palatka and Patntm county are the latest in the movement, and they are getting ready for a good county fair to be held at Palatka the week beginning December 15. Putnam county is one or tne oest in Florida and is producing many things on a profitable basis, which are of value to the State, and which will ultimately make rlorida one ol the garden spots of America. County fairs serve a two-fold pur pose. First, they stimulate the farm ers, truck growers and stockraisers of a county to produce better stuff and to put it on show at its best. Second, they show to the outsiders what the county will produce, and stimulate interest on the part of the homesecker, who may see what can be done in a community before he locates there.
