Giles, a well known color ed citizen who returned on the 7th from Philadelphia, where he had been working, and brought with him an attack of influenza, by taking good care of himself has recovered.. ' The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Riggs of Charlotte Harbor, ,was taken last week, to an Arca dia sanitarium, where she was op erated on for appendicitis. Re ports up to yesterday are to the effect that she stood the operation finely and is now rapidly recovering. In everv town of the state in which the Southern Utilities Com pany have an ice factory, they are publishing advertisements in the newspapers urging people to invest in Liberty Bonds. The company has an advertisement in this paper, which every body should read. Surely the direct ors of 'the Southern Utilities Com- pany are patriots. May tney al ways prosper. ' - A large crowd of people, -both whites and blacks, were greatly interested Saturday night by a talk from Sergeant Davis, who was severely wounded in the sec ond battle of the Marne in France. Shuby Locklear, who is earning big wages in an Arcadia garage, was here in a car with his wife and baby, Sunday afternoon, vis iting his father, J. E. Locklear. Archie Bailey's seven-year old son was kicked in the mouth by; a horse, Saturday; and suffered painful cuts in is lips and on his chin. Sergeant McNiece, with his wife and little daughter, arrived here last week from their home in Dennison, Iowa, and the three are temporarily sojourning at the Goldstein residence. The ser geant is a retired federal s6ldier. He has served for many years in the armv. always with credit to himself, and he is highly regarded by all who know him. He and Dr. Boyle are friends of long standing. ; , . Madame Sarah , Addicker of London, England, arrived here Saturday night, on a visit to her Punta Gorda kindred. She is a sister of the late E. Goldstein and is, therefore, an aunt of Harry C. Goldstein. She is an aunt also of Mrs. Ed Wotitzky. Madame Ad- Theatre and was listened to with 'dicker, is suffering from shell the closest attention. Dotson and family moved last week into the Moates resi dence in the eastern part of town, and the home vacated by them is expected to be occupied this week by F, S. Bates, a capitalist of Fort J, A. Reynolds, wife and son-in-law, S. D. Blazer,' came down Oc tober 9th, via auto, to bring Mrs.N S. D. Blazer and son, S. D. jr., to visit S. D. Blazer's parents Mr. and Mrs. II. B. Blazer, for a few days. . V '.' Mrs. C. G. Davis returned last week from Warner, N. n., where she spent the summer -very pleas antly . amongst kindred and friends. Her many friends here extended her a cordial welcome on her return. : ; . Myers, who has bought it. Mrs. M, W. Sturdy is enjoying a visit from her sister, Mrs. John Burnett of Colorado, and her sister-in-law, Mrs. R. D. Collins of Oklahoma, who arrived on Thurs day night of last week, and will propably spend the winter here. Jrs. M. A. Hanson ; went to Fort Myers Saturday and visited relatives, and friends there till Tuesday morning, when she re turned. Yesterday, evening, she left for Nashville, Tenn., to aid in nursing some of her relatives, who are suffering from influenza, ' Miss Gladys Martin, one of our accomplished high school teach ers, enjoyed a visit from Thurs day evening till Friday morning from her father, "Tex" Martin, a popular commercial "traveler who lives in Ocala. Sh'e is spend ing this week with him in Ocala. Miss Dona Walker returned Saturday night, from a month's vacation which she enjoyed visit ing relatives and friends in Jack sonville and other places. Her new fall stock of fall and winter goods is about complete and she invites the ladies to call and in spect them. ... ' . ' Lawrence Neel, a Bermont boy, was bitten by a ground-rattlesnake on Wednesday, 9th inst., and his mother, Mrs. Edgar Neel, brought him here in the middle of that night and woke up Dr. Stone to treat the boy. Mother and son were frightened by the snake-bite, but Dr. Stone administered the Droner remedy, and they went home rejoicing. D, H. Huckeby of Cleveland, is not to be outdone in patriotism by any other citizen. He has not only bought Liberty Bonds of ev ery issue, but, last week, he had a big advertisement in this paper in which he urged every body to buy them. There, has never been any discount on any one in this region by the name of Huckeby. Everyone of them has been and is of "true blue" American man hood. '-:, ' Swan Hartwell, a capitalist and big coal dealer of Boston, Mass., was here last Saturday, inspect ing three day cruisers being built for himself and friends by h, L. Barnhill at Charlotte Harbor. These cruisers are motor-pleasure boats ; they are built in the height of style and have greater speed than the ordinary small motor boat.' As soon as they are finish ed, Mr. Hartwell and friends' will come down and proceed to enjoy a winter's cruise in these waters. Mrs. Clara Davis, as one of a Red Cross committee, was busy last week trying to make a com plete list of all men from 'Punta Gorda, Charlotte 'Harbor,) .Cleve land and Acline, who are serving ; in the army beyond the Atlantic. The Red Cross wishes and intends to send each one of them a Christ mas package. Every body should aid Mrs. Davis in getting tne name of every one of them. Send, her their names and addresses im mediately. She does not want to omit or skip a single one of them. The Christmas packages must be made up and shipped within the coming week.
