Took Throne From Sister.
It Is not generally known that the
IcitiL' of Spain succeeded not his fa
ther, but his sister, the Infanta Mer
cedes, who was, though only six years
old. queen of Spain from the death of
her father. Alfonso XII, to the birth of
the present king. Altogether she
reigned ltio days, probably the short
est relsm on record. The Sntle law,
which bars females from the accession
to a throne, does not operate In Spain,
and until the sex of Alfonso Nil's
posthumous child was determined, the
eldest of his two daughters automat

This Is the time of year when the
poison Ivy cases begin to reach for a
record as people get out Into the open
and explore the wonders of nature,
says the American Forestry associa
tion. But poison Ivy Is not a thing to
he fooled with and the association
points out that soap and hot water In
wholesale applications comprise the
best measure of relief.
The poison, nfter being deposited
In the skin, requires some time to
penetrate, and if this penetration 1in
lie prevented by thorough washing,
eruption and Irritation will not result, perfect.
While exposed parts should be 851 W., I
cleansed in this manner as soon after Maryland
exposure as possible, it Is worth while
to make the attempt even 12 or 20
hours afterward in the hope that at
least a portion of the poison may be
removed. A heavy Inther should be
produced and the washing should be
continued several minutes. Severe
scrubbing with a brush is not advisa
ble, but several swabs or small com
presses of gauge may be used, dis
carding ench In turn.
poison may not be distributed by the
cloth.
Bathing with alcohol diluted with
tin equal amount of water Is also an
effective preventive. Where exposure
has been more general, a bath for the
entire body, followed by n change of
clothing Is good preventive measure.
The hair should not he neglected.
Bathing, If not accompanied by suffi
cient changing of water or rinsing,
inuy result In spreading the rash to
skin that had not been Infected. In
cases that nre at nil serious a physi
cian should be consulted.
Scores of remedies and prescrip
tions nre more or less In popular fa
vor, the American Forestry associa
tion says, hut In spite of the claims
they assert that no specific treatment
for poisoning from ivy and sumac Is
yet available. Ointments should not
be used In the acute stage of the dis
ease. In the later stages, however,
soothing and astringent olntmVnts may
be of value In allaying Irritation and
hastening cure. The extent to which
It Is desirable to use solutions of per
manganate of potash, hyposulphite of
soda, sulphate of
salts) nnd other remedies, Is also dis
cussed. Migar ot lead, formerly much
used, often proves disappointing if ap
plied after Inflammation has devel
oped, and the user runs the risk of
lend poisoning If this substance Is n
