Everybody buys every thing in sight ami the merchants are cutigtit in their own trap. They start advertising to beat the band. A riot of selling: follows, the merchants OVER ADVERTISE ami OVERSELL THE MARKET. Demand for goods keeps up and then conies the trip lo the bank to borrow for expansion. Then what? Shortage and rising prices a not of buying before prices tilt to the top and a wild spree of advertising to keep the game going. Suddenly (here comes a halt. Rtiying slows up, and timid unbusi nesslike merchants curtail advertising and the buying halt continues. Then advertising is stoped and business becomes stagnant. When trade needs no stimulus the merchants buy space like drunken sailors, but when trade needs a strong push, they contract. 11 businesss spent one third the money In advertising when trade is booming and three times the money when trade is poor, business would find stability. Now is the Time to Advertise Extensively, Don't throw chips on a blazing fire. The wood is needed when Hie fire is low. Advertising now means a real service to the buying public. The people want to know where and what they can buy economically.
