jVJOOSE P/\E)E) jVJJMEH _DEVOTED to the interests of moose pass and KENAI PENINSULA - Vol. 1. Moose Pass. Alaska - September 4, 1939 No. 29 WAR I S 0 N Said France's premier Daladier Friday morning following Hitler's radio speech Thursday nighti "It has started." Today France, England, Australia, Czechoslovakia, Egypt and New Zealand are allied to save Poland. (Hurrah for the Czechs). Hitler had counted upon the population of Austria, Czechoslovakia and Memel to labor in the fields and factories of the Reich, thus freeing many more millions of native Ger mans for front line service which would have multiplied Germany's man power of the la6t war by nearly two. This morning Poland is fighting on Ger man territory in magnificent effort to keep the war away from their women and children. Yesterday (Sunday) morning the French captured the German fast liner Bremen with out blood shed. Up until 5 p.m.Sunday no shot had been fired by the allied coun tries. Sunday afternoon (our time) the Germans torpedoed the Cunard-White Star liner of the British passenger fleet - off the horthwest coast of Scotland - the S.S. Athenia. It was bound for Canada with 1400 passengers aboard - 300 Americans on the passenger list. The French freighter Corbet was obliged to run to cover in the Port of San Juan, Porto Rico, for protection from a Gehman pursuer. HIGHLIGHTS FROM HITLER'S SPEECH THURSDAY NIGHT Reported by Jorene Smith "I warned them time and time again and only a few weeks ago notified England and told them Poland could not continue. "One must be careful not to mistake the present Germany for the former Germany. "I have tried to accept a British propo sal, but Great Britain orders us to take up this matter directly with Poland. "In answer to my last proposal a general mobilization was ordered in Poland. "I have, therefore, decided to speak to Poland in the same language that they are speaking to us. "I will take the necessary action but I do not want to fight a war against women and children. "I have notified my war force to go by this, but if our opponents take advantage of this, they will receive unmerciful treatment at our hands. "I will carry on this fight until the rights of the Reich have been received, "I have built up German forces and 19 million marks have been spent, "Nothing can stop me for one second from fulfilling my duty. "We shall solve this problem ourselves and the Central States said that they would be allied in neutrality. "If anyone shall break this neutrality, we shall act accordingly, (Next column) MIKE CONNOLLY BURIED AT SUNRISE Th.e funeral of Mike Connolly, the fine old-timer who was accidentally drowned on Thursday of last week, was held Monday, August 28. It was largely attended, both at the Catholic church at Seward and at Sunrise where his body was laid to rest in historical old Point Comfort cemetery, his relatives and friends being united in think ing that that would be his desire. Mr. Connolly, who was 78 years old, had lived for 43 years in Alaska, at Seward and at Sunrise. He has never been back to the States since coming to Alaska from Seattle in 1896. He was born on St. Ed ward Island, off New Brunswick province of East Canada. He is survived by a sis ter, Miss Margaret A. Connolly of Dorches ter, Mass. His drowning occurred when with Gordon McCann he was paying out a cable from a boat with the object of rigging a ferry across Six Mile river. When, thru some mischance, the boat overturned and both men were thrown into the river, Mr. Connol* ly's body did not rise to the surface and when his body was recovered, it was with the heavy coil of cable wire still around his legs. Mr. McCann was carried several hundred feet by the rapidly running river and barely escaped with his life. "I wish to state here that this decis ion is of great importance and a turning point in History. "Russia and Germany fought together in the world war and suffered} but this will not happen a second time, "This agreement has been recorded in Moscow as well as in Berlin. "If anything should happen to me in this war then my successor) Goering) will take my place. "One word I have never learned and that word is capitulation. "I will tell you that November 11f 1918, will never repeat itself in German history. "The various items of this motion will make Danzig a part of the German Reich." Hitler demand^’: 1. - If Poland fights, her complete parti tion. 2. - if Poland yields, establishment of a German procterate over Poland. 3. - In any case Hitler demands Danzig. Pity the poor German people thrust into a war by a man who can only express him self in "I-s." It would require an ad ding machine to count the I-s he used in his radio address. Only the German boys who have grown up since 1918 are his ad herents from choice. The remainder are acting under compulsion and the result may be indeed "a turning point in German history,"
