He .arrived last Thursday. TheL- D. S. Conference of the .St. Johns Stake will convene next Saturday and Sunday May 5th land 6th. The Selective Conscription Bill became a law last Saturday and Conscription will start in two weeks. Mr. Gordon Gass is the new Assistant in the St. Johns State J3ank. He hails from Albuquer- que, N. M. Mr. Alex Nicoll and Miss Naomi Marble both of Vernon were married Jast Thursday evening by Judge George H. Crosby. Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Knight were in the city Sunday and Mon day for a short visit with Mrs. L. C. Sherwood and others. Pansy McCray was kicked by a Ford automobile, last Monday while trying to crank it and her arm was broken just above the wrist. Dr. Herbert A. Berry will be at the Saffell Hotel in Springer ville Ariz., Thursday, Friday, -and -Saturday- and-will attend vto" all your wants in the dental line. Tom Caraway has been busy this week wiring the academy building and when completed you may rest assured that it will be OK for Tom is IT when it comes to anything in the electrical line. The Stockmen's bank opened it doors Monday morning for busi ness. Abel Ortega, former as sistant at the St Johns State Bank is now holding down that position in the new bank. v George Wilhelm and boys were in the city for a few days last week visiting with Mr, and Mrs. A. V. Gibbons. George says that the people at Vernon are going to plant big crops this year. Wm. Harris Jr. who volunteer ed with the first bunch of volun teers from St. Johns returned home last Sunday. When the commanding officer at Naco found out that William was not of age he was at once sent home. William showed that he had the true grit at any rate. Frank Allen wants to sell his shoe shop and go to farming. Frank is a first class farmer and feel that he could do more good to more people by farming than he can by fixing shoes. He has a good trade worked up in St. Johns in shoe repairing and is willing to sell cheap to any one who wish es to get into this line of business. There is quite a cry for every man to plant all that he can and President Wilson in his appeal to the people of America asks that everybody help, he also asks that the merchants be satisfied with a reasonable profit and quick sales, but seemingly some of our merchants do not know or do not care to help in the great cause for it is almost impossible for a poor man to pay the prices asked for seed corn etc. i M0RE volunteers. I Wilford Brinkerhoof of Hoi brook, special appointed recruit ing officer for Uncle Sam was here Sunday and Monday and again Apache County sent a few more men into the service. This time the following are those who volunteered: Jos. Jarvis, Perry Plumb, and Ambrosio Armijo all of St. Johns; Wells Hamblin and Claude Lytle of Eagar; Jack Chavez of Springerville and Benigno Chavez of Concho. They left St. Johns about 2 P. M. but before leaving the Band Boys were out and rendered sweet music to cheer them on their way. Apache County now has thirteen in the service and most of them are from St. Johns. Waite-Whiting. Last Saturday morning at 9. A. M. Mr. Lynn Whiting, popu lar son of Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Whiting and Miss Gladys Waite, charming daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J . W. Waite were united in the bonds of matrimony by Bish op Wm. D. Rencher. The marriage is no surprise, for the many friends of the young couple have long suspected that the event would soon take place but as to the exact time they were kept in doubt. Immediately after the ceremony the happy young couple left for the mountains where they will re main for the summer enjoying the cool breezes of the mountains while Mr. Whiting will attend to his catttle. Jim Cullen was in Tuesday from his ranch on the Blanco and brought in about 2500 lbs of corn that he had raised on his ranch without water. The corn was the yellow fiint and the ears were all the way from 9 inches to 14 inches long with good plump kernels. Mr. Cullen raised about 350 bushels. Updike is in charge this insures success. Maurice Barth son of Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Barth of this city arrived from Boulder, Colorado, Wednesday where he h as been attending school for the past year. Jacob, his brother went to Albu querque N. M. last week to pur chase a truck for delivering pur poses for their Merchandise busi ness here in St. Johns and Maur ice met him at that point and to gether they returned to this city in the truck, which is a "Jim-Dandy". L. D. S. Conference. The regular quarterly confer ence of the St. Johns Stake will convene here Friday, Saturday and Sunday and meetings will be held as follows: Friday, Stake Board of Educa tion meets at ,2 P. M. Bishops Meeting at 5 P. M., and High Council meeting at 7 :30. Saturday regular meeting at 10 a m. and 2 p. m. and Primary convention meetings also be tween. Sunday general meetings at 10 A. M. and 2 P. M. and Relief Society convention meeting be tween and M. I. A. meeting at 7: 30 P. M. There will be pre sent Elders btephen L. Richards of the twelve Apostles who was recently chosen to fill the vacancy caused by the, death of Elder Francis M. Lyman and Joseph W. McMurrin president of the Seventies and Mrs. Susan Y. Gates who comes in the interest of the Relief Society and there will also be another lady present in the interest of the Primary, but whose name we have not learned. Ambrosio Candelaria Dies. Ambrosio Candelaria died at his home in Albuquerque, N. M. last Sunday at the age of 48 years, neiunerai services were, held yesterday. Mr. Candelaria was raised in Apache County and lived a t Concho for many years moving to Albuquerque some five or six years ago. .While in Apache County he was engaged m the sheep business at which business he made good and accumulated a fortune. He has several brothers now living at Concho who are also en gaged in the sheep industry and merchandising and men who are wealthy and prominent in the business world of Apache County. They are Juan and Rosalio Can delaria. In the death of Ambrosio Can delaria Apache County has lost one, of her steadfast friends. The Herald joins in offering condol ence to those who are called to mourn . We are told that Springerville is to have a big hotel and bank in the very near future and we are not surprised, for those who are looking "into the future some, know that Springerville will one day be a city of- importance and when men like Mr. Gustav Beck er of the Becker .
