IF GERMANY WINS-WE PAY By Herbert Kaufman Despite the awful drubbing which Germany has just experi enced on the Western Front, she is still a match for the combined forces of the Allies. Without the assistance of Amer can munition makers and food exporters, it is quite certain that her enemies would now be very much at her mercy. Our entrance into the situation is the one element which ultimate fly guarantees the Kaiser's defeat. The Imperial Government is therefore in the position of a bul ly, with all the odds in favor of thrashing an apponent, who is suddenly pulled away by an on looker and held while the other fellow proceeds to turn the tables i .and pummel him into submission. Therefore, it is logical that Germany should hate us with an insane ferocity that argues no mercy in the unlikely, but possi ble event of her victory. This possibility will become a probability in proportion to the immediacy of our preparation to fulfil the responsibility we've as sumed. Assured of reinforcements when needed, our Allies will hurl their full strength against the Central Powers and capitalize their pres ent advantage to the utmost. But if we fall down on our con tract and do not deliver the assist ance on which, we are pledged when it is expected, the conse quences are shuddering to con template. This war has by no means reach ed a decisive stage, but we can determine the decision by uni versal military service, with a whole-hearted co-operation of in dustrial resources of theBepublic. The eleventh hour is ten hours late: We can save men, save m onths and save millions through prompt and vigorous action, If we dilly-dally, argue, trust to luck and place to much hope in an early peace, von Hindenburg's ruthless battalions will Belgiumize America, German war vessels will pound our coasts and women and children, as well as men will know how .terrible war can be made. If Germany can reach this side at all. she will come- as the con queror of Europe, as a desolating ,and despoiling Hun, burning with rage and avid cupidity to hum ble our pride, to loot our wealths, to smash us. If fear and selfishness are hold ing you out of the ranks or tight ening your grip on the bank ac count, fear and selfishness even more urgently demand that you enlist at once and lend every dol lar and effort to the prosecution of an earnest and valorous cam- rjaurn . Once certain that the .United States means to send all males of military age to the front and in tends to spend whatever money is necessary to warrant a triumph for its arms, Berlin will quite probably surrender to the over whelming handicap before our forces or fortunes are on the field- Every slacker encourages an another. One enlistment now has the moral value of two later on. Seek to escape service and you're sure to undergo it. Pro crastination threatens our chances. There's no way out for us, ex cept by pitching in. You'll have to fight in the end, so volunteer in the beginning. Whatever time we lose in dal lying must be made up by addi tional levies. Your shirking may eventually draw your fathers into the ranks. Answer the President's call. J)o your duty today. j Church Building at Alpine Completed. There are still a few spots left on this earth that are not invol ved in the war, but the Lord only knows where they are. Germany declares there will be no let-up in the submarine war.
