The party, apparently bound for this city, crashed into the rear of a truck parked on the side of the road while traveling at a high rate of speed on U. S. highway 52 about 12:30 a. m., Friday. The dead are: Madeline Griffin, years old, 52472 Indiana avenue, Indiapano lis, who died on the way to the Witham hospital of her injuries. Her skull was fractured. (C) —Reports reached her Friday that Ethiapian warriors had re taken Dessye, once field head quarters of Emperor Haile Selas sie, after the Italians had rushed 12,000 men to Addis Ababa to re inforce the Italian hold on the cap ital. The Dessye attackers were led by Ras Seyoun, former com mander of the Ethiopian army on the northern front, it is reported. The retaking of Dessye means the Italian line between Addis Ababa and Eretria has been cut. Loses $1,500 In Gold Coin JASPER, Tex. (C)s William Land Williams, 60, lost $1,500 in gold which he had buried near the • mail box in his front yard. Wil liams claims he never told anyone about the money, which he had saved as a timber contractor 35 years ago. ARIZONA'S PREMIER RACE WEEKLY PHOENIX, ARIZONA. AUGUST 14, 1936 o Boy Kidnaped; Texan Jailed TEXARKANA, Tex. An at tempt of a white man to kidnap and hold a Negro boy for SSOO ransom was blocked when the lad escaped and the kidnaper was ar rested last wek and confessed. The white man, J. H. Williford, 32, of Kingsville, Tex., has been arrested by Sheriff Q. T. Harde gree of Cass county and is being held in the county jail at Linden. Williford was arrested by the sher iff at Rodessa, La. William Rambo, 14, the victim, was kidnaped June 25. Three hours after his abduction, he es caped from the ropes which Willi ford had used to truss him up a mile from home. R. Rambo, the boy’s father ,told the sheriff he re ceived two notes asking SSOO ran som and giving instructions as to where the money should be sent. \ EARL HINES AND BAND IN BUS WRECK CUMBERLAND, Md.—Earl Hines, known to thousands of mu sic lovers, theatergoers, night life habitues, and radio listeners-in as “Father Hines,“ suffered a wrenched back and was otherwise shaken up in the accident which occurred near here when the bus in which he and his band were riding on their way to Chicago, turned over, after leaving the road. (C) Zack Cockrell of Webster county, who confessed the slaying of Ward Wilson, a white youth, was given 20 years in state prison on a man slaughter charge. The man was or iginally sentenced to hang when he was tried for the crime in January. A change of venue brought the case here. o Drought Strikes . Crushing Blow to Sharecroppers WASHINGTON, Sharecroppers, tenant farmers and agricultural laborers in the Southern states have been hard hit by the drought and face starvation this .winter, according to federal officials. More than 20,000 additional Southern drought sufferers were added to the WPA rolls this week. Observers state that the govern ment must extend its relief to many more thousands of farmers if the aid is meant to be effective. It also must increase relief wages to guarantee a subsistance standard at least, they stated. o DR. SMITH TO DIRECT $4,000 RESAERCH WASHINGTON (C) Dr. Alonzo DeG. Smith of the Howard School of Medicine is to direct a 4,000 research project in pediatrics. Monday afternoon ,the Bronchos gave the fans plenty thrills when they scored two baseball victories at the Nace Municipal stadium to win the Southwest Semi-pro Base ball Championship. In the first encounter the Bron chos, overcoming a 10-run lead, spilled the Yuma boys’ bid by a 15-14 count, and then took the Tucson All-Stars to the time of 13-11. (C) Philippa Duke Schuyler got her fifth fea ture article spread in the New York Herald Tribune Thursday. This time it was Philippas fifth birthday, and the paper sent Lin coln Bennett, star writer, and carried a two column article with a picture. The paper has fea tured Philippa regularly since she was 2 1-2 years old, with articles in between. This year Philippa got a grand piano on her birthday.
