The ac tion begun early last * week, was said to be especially heavy near Gondar, north of the lake. Ethi opian forces in that region are commanded by Wand Bawassam, second son of Ras Kassa, bril liant Ethiopian commander of the Northern Ethiopian army which effectively held up the Italian ad vance until the Fascists began spraying the entire countryside with poison gas. Taking advantage of the rainy season which has rendered tem porarily useless the Italian tanks and planes, the Ethiopian forces have made three major attacks on Italian positions in the past fort night. Several Italian planes, in cluding one huge tri-motor bomb er, were shot down and 60 trucks wreckfled in one of the engage ments on the outskirts of Addis Ababa. Ethiopian troops on one occasion penetrated into the city, taking a heavy toll of the Fascist garrison. The city is reported facing a serious food shortage as a result of interrupted communi cations. o Attack 'Jitney' Cabs in Chicago CHICAGO Believed to have been inspired by the bus company and Yellow Cab drivers unable to meet competition, police last week began a wholesale arrest of Negro cab drivers who dominate Southside streets by carrying pas sengers for 10 cents. Bish op Petros was summarily executed in the streets of Addis Ababa af ter Italian officials charged him < ”ol of this business worth a reput ed million dollars annually, but it was believed all difficulties had been ironed out until last week when 50 drivers were arrested and charged with “picking up another passenger without consent of the first.” Cab companies contend that in asmuch as bus officials refuse to hire Negro drivers, they are justi fied in getting what business they can. Lately Yellow cabs have been cruising through the Southside on a dime basis but Negroes have shunned them. In order to combat this action by police, the result of a recently passed city ordinance, colored cab companies have formed a protec tl/.? league and have hired two of the area’s most talented lawyers to combat these acts. It is ex pected, however, that the trouble will subside within a few days as it previously has. ARE YOU LONELY? Italian workmen and troops at Massawa, chief port of the Italian armies, also added to the worries of Mussolini by refusing to obey orders until their remands for transport home were conceded. Four loaded Italian ships were sunk at the docks and a munitions dump set on fire by the dissatis fied Italian workers and soldiers. The seriousness of the situation confronting the Italian invaders is indicated by a Havas News Agen cy dispatch from Addis Ababa, which says that the city “is in a state of war, with the lives of the Italian troops and foreigners in grave danger, although the Ital ians repulsed a three-fold attack on the capital by the Ethiopians last Friday and Saturday after a battle which lasted 36 hours.” 3rd Avenue and Madison Phone 3-5111 LICENSED
