Frank Meador was in town Satur day. C. L. Hall rs on a business visit to Denver. Mr. Schorr of Phoenix was in town Mon lay. An efficient water system is sadly needed in this town. Dr. Chandler went to California last week on business- Mrs. W. H. Code is home from a summer’s visit in the east. Dr. Williams was down from Gold field last week returning Saturday evening. Mrs. W. H. McMichaels is down from Big Bug visiting Mrs. Long of the Alhambra. Mrs. Frank Robson has been -quite ill for a week, but is now convalescent. A. F. Fuller and wife came down from Tonto Friday last week and left Monday for home. It is pretty generally known tha t Agent Young of Sacaton, was in town one day this week. The Territorial Teachers Associa tion will meet in Phoenix o» Jan. 2nd to sth inclusive. Fine line of Fall and Winter goods on hand and now arriving, at B. F Johnson, Sons & Co. Rev. Fred. The many friends of Miss Annie Anderson are pleased to know that ahe is in a fairway to recovery. EL Gray will move the Central Market in a few days into the build ing adjoining the postoffice. J- S. Peterson’s new brick residence is one of the most handsomely fur nished on the southside. • < Judge Hakes has the brick on the 1 ground for a fine residence on his lots corner of First and E streets. We have not yet seen a dog with a muzzle on, in accordance with the provisions of the ordinance. The net receipts of the supper given by the Ladies Aid Society last Friday night were 5i7.50. Another one of the train robbers— Oscar Rogers, was captured at Tacna Yuma county, last Sunday evening by Fred. Chappel and M. F. Walsh. On Sunday night last at about 10 o’clock tme ot the most wonderful meteors ever seen here passed across the heavens from northwest to south east. It appeared over the o i/tlirvest part of town and passed through a} curve oi'fuliy eigh.y degrees. At fir.-t; it was 8m all and red iu color bui its; size suddenly increased and its color assumed every hue and tint, white its brilliancy lighted up the earth like a noonday sun. When it approached the earth just this side of Superstition it burst like a rocket into myriads of fragments and these displayed every conceivable combination of color. The flight of this wonderful wanderer was noiseless and a brilliant streak of light several hundred feet in length followed it. It loots as though Mesa were going to start up actively in the building line. W. H. Code and L. Salter have bought the vacant lot between the hardware store and B. F. Johnson, Sons & Co.’s store, and will erect a brick building forty feet front. E. L. Gray and B. .McDreary are formulat ing arrangements for the construction of a brick block forty-four feet front on the north side of Main street just west of the Press office. These and Johnson, Sons & Co.’s brick block are assured besides which there are some others in contemplation. One carpenter at the head of the canal who was wanted as a witness in a case down here didn’t want to come and he didn’t. One of our constables went up after him and made a play for him but the knight of the Jack plane nimbly gave him the slip. A brief race through brush and over rocks was all there was of it. . The official lost his hat, retraced his steps, found it—the hat—and wended his way homeward, while Spaul stood on a rock in the moonlight and silently made faces at him. W E Price shot W F Shurbet in Phoeniz Monday morning. Shurbet lived until Tuesday conscious to the last, saying to his wife in a whisper, a moment before his last breath, “Goodbye; lam going now.” Price is in jail. The Coroner’s jury charg ed that the murder was premeditated, willful and malicious. The Ladies Aid Society ot the L. D. S. gave a supper and dance on last Friday night. The dance was in the Social Hall and the supper was serv ed in the neit hall belonging to the Society A large number was present and the supper netted $17.50. Johnson. The H. Simkins Marble and Lime Co. has just completed burning 25,- 000 pounds of lime on an order. Fisher of the present line we believe expects to extend his line to Goldfield and will < put on four horse coaches. Hector Gillispie and wife came , down from Goldfield Sunday with the remains of their two-months-old baby i which died from brain fever. Mrs. G. will remain here for a week the guest j of Mrs- C. I.
