W. D' IKORTON. A. P.SHEWMAN. MORTON & SIIEWMAN Publishers. —• : -r- --- Advertising raises made known on application. Frida?, July 9, 1«97. We haven’t heard of McKinley going duck hunting yet. Ths new tariff bill passed the Senate Wednesday by a majority pf ten. The returns commg in show the usual heaAy crop of Fourth of July causalities. The bill for the annexation of Hawaii will be considered in the Senate today. It is now said that even Spain has tired of Butcher Weyler and that he will be recalled. Judge Morrow, of the U. S. Circuit Court, has reversed the de cision in the Florence Blythe case in California, giving the propert) to the English heirs of Thomas Blythe. W. M. Grifeith has assumed the off ee of U.S. Marshal. Almost his first official act will be the exe cution of the murderer, Lashly, which will take place today. “Griff” will shirk no duty, how eyer disagreeable it may be. It is authoratively stated that Allen T. Bird, of the Nogales Oasis, will be the next consul for Nogales, Mexico. We shail be pleased to congratulate Editor Bird on his preferment. He is capable and honest, and besides is worthy of the position. The Salt River valley has reaped a rich harvest this season and there is a better feeling among farmers, stockmen and all classes of people than they hate experienced for years. The Halt River valley is all right, and this might equally be said of the entire territory. MThe general impression prevailed soon after the cold wave last spring that there would be but a light supply pf fruit; and yet now the trees are loaded. It was thought, too, that the grain crop would be curtailed by a heavy percentage, and yet our warehouses are full and large shipments have been made and teams crowd our streets daily, loaded with grain. Mesa has broken her record in turning off wheat and barley this year. Many people of Southern Ari zona seem to be possessed of a mania for the coast in the summer And yet it is a fact that Arizona possesses summer resorts more healthful and with far mere at tractions than the coast, and the cost of a summer outing at them far less expensive. The Qrand canyon is peerless as a summer re sort, besides everywhere in the North are pine-clad hills and mountains, pure, cold water and innumerable other attractions tjiat make summer life pleasant and in structive. IN MEMORIAM The following resolutions were passed by Mesa Ledge, No. 14, I. O. O. F., last Saturday night: Whereas the decrees of an All wise Ruler of the Universe have called hence our beloved brother, Prof. F. J. Netherton, therefore be it Resolved that while we bow humbly to the .vill of the Creator yre deeply deplore the untimely and sad death of oui brother ard his sudden removal frorp among us. Resolved that our most sincere and heartfelt sympathy be extended to his aged parents and to his rela tives, and that a oopy of these resolution* be furnished to his parents and also spread upon tl e minutes of this Lodge and also published in the Mesa Fret> Pres. 1 , and that our charter be draped in mourning for the period of thirty .days.
