CENSUS OF ARIZONA; The following Bguren relatiae to the census returns of Arizona have been made publje: The dopulation of Arizona is 122,- 212. showing an increase of 62,592, or 104.9 per cent. The population of the following places is. Chloride, 466; Flagstaff, 1,271; G1bhe.1,495; Jerome, 2.861; Mesa, 722; Nogales, 1,761; Pima, 522; Prescott, 3,559; Solomon vi lie, 629; Tompa, 829; Thatcher, 644; IVmibstone, Tucson, 7,531; Win slowj 1,305; Yuma, 1 402. If there is a man in Maricopa county that is worthy of the suffrage of the people, that man is N. A. Mor ford. For twenty years through evil and good report he has stood firmly for Arizona and the Saft River valley. His services as citizen and newspaper publisher have been worth many thousands of dollars to the county, And if there is such a thing as grati tude for services rendered, Mr. Mor ford is entitled to every vote in the county. The office di Probate Judge is an important one 1 , and we do not believe the people will make the mis take of entrusting the duties to a young and inexperienced man. Young Mr. Langston so far as we know is a very witty yoiing man but no man old or young should be elected to so 'im portant an office as that of Probate Judge unless he is thoroughly known which Mr. Langston is not, for he has lived in our midst but a brief period of time.—Gazette. The Tempe NeWs says that the Town Council has let a contract for the construction of a good roadway across the river bottom The work was commenced this morning and the mutenal being used is the cement from the hills jußt north of the bridge. This cement makes a road almost equal to a paved street and when it becomes thoroughly packed it is almost as solid as a rock. Being laid on the sand it is scarcely to be ex pected that the road will withstand any considerable taise in the river but the material being so close the cost of repairing the road will be very small. The move on the part of the town council will receive (ffie commendation of the traveling public antTjyttl add to Tempe’a already established repu tation as having the best streets and roads iu the territory 1 1 - REPUBLICAN RALLY. * The Republicans had a grand rally last night. The Mesa band furnished good tausic to the waiting crdWd and kept them in good humor. The train from Phoenix got in’’ about 8 o'clock and it brought with it the Indian hand, the Republican Marching dub and the county candidates and visi tors. The speakers and candidates took the platform and Hon. A. 0 McQueen presided. * Hon. C. M. Frazier was the first Bpeuker and he delivered a very able address, calling attention to the merits of the county ticket and asking the support of (;he people for it. He was followed by Hon. Jerry Millay, candidate for Councilman, who gaYe "sOcae very convincing reasons why every one should vote for Gov. Murphy for Delegate to Congress. Jerry is always a pleasing speaker and on this occasion was at his best and acquitted himself with credit. Arthur J. Edwards, candidate for District Attorney, was the last speaker and he gave some good reasons why the tichet should be elected and why he in particular should receive the of fice be seeks. He made a'good im pression, and w6n the good opinion of all who heard him. The meeting then adjourned and the visitors took the train for Phber.ix CURE FOR SMUT. The Agricultural Experiment Sta tion Os the'University has just issued a bulletin setting forth a cure for “Stinking Smut," a matter which has troubled our farmers a good deal. We quote as fdllows: ’ * ■■ The remedy it simple and easily applied. Any farmer can, by the ex penditure of av« ry small amount of mouey, treat his seed wheat in a man ner that will insure bis crap agaidst an attack of this fungus. He needs for this operation four things: Blue stone br copper sulphate, a good quan tity of lime, some large vesSfls which will hold Mater, such as tubs or bar rels, and a pl&ce ro spread his wheat out to dry when lie is through treat ing it. The operation is as follows: Oue pound of copper sulphate is dissolved in 24 gallons of water. The seed is soaked ip this solution for* 12 hours, after which the Lquid is drained off, and the seed is again soaked for ten minutes in lime water made by slak ing one pound of lime in ten gallons of water. After drying, the wheat can be sown at any time without any danger from the effect of smut. The process tabulated is as follows: 1. Soak seed for 12 hours jn coppor sulphate solution. 2. Soak s6edfor five or teg minutes in lime water. 3. Dry the seed. 4. Sow the seed. No doubt the above will be of value to the farmers of this valley The executive committee of the carnival held a meeting at the board of trade robtfrs last night, says the Gazette. S. M. McGowan was elected chairman of the committee, hut hd positively refused to sejptfe as direc tor-general of the carniyol again this year. The carnival will be held five day 8, beginning Dec. 4. Donations amounting to nearly $3,000 have been voluntarily subscribed. The commit tee will be out interviewing the busi ness men early next week. Primitive man did not at first be gin his agricultural operations by ir rigating great valleys and plains. He commenced, perhaps, with a small patch of ground And a 'little strain of water, or planted his siiiopla crpps on the edge of the'desert, Utilizing the water of some perehiaj’ spring or laboriously drew it from a well. Then Jater he learned to broaden his opera tions and work in communities, until finally he undertook great projects and accomplished engineering feats in construction of canals, viaduots, and complete systems which have hardly since been surpassed by modern capU tal and ingenuity. - v BEES A&^FOAOHBRS. t>_ A very interesting ca«e hqfi origin ated at Warwick, N.
