Friends meet to part, and parting leave to memory
Her fairest pictures: just as blooms the rose
Not half so sweet in all spring's warmth and beauty :
As viewed across old winter's fallen snows.
Youth lives too close to life to see it glory;
On hearts so young no warning shadows fall.
Old age alone caff see through eyes growrrweary-".-;
" The splendor of the days beyond recall.
But, if the aged heart has learned the lesson
Of fruitless' years--of squandered hours of gold,
It, tpo, has learned the deathless joy of doing.
And all a noble, well-filled life can hold.
Regret nor anguish have no place with duty;
Love knows not a single hate or shame;
Not all the sordid gain of all the ages
For one brief space can match a spotless name.
A few days or a few years spent together
What matters then that friendship must be brief?
Need thoughts of broken dreams or words of parting
' Bring sorrow to a heart, or tears of grief? '
Not so. If we but fill our each day's pages
v With kindly words, or help some friend to bear
His cross grown heavy, neither time nor trial
Can bring to hearts so filled a single care.
Some day our lessons done, our notes all written,
We'll close the book and lay aside the pen;
And be our pages fair or marred, at closing
'Twill not be ours to write them through again.
So let us strive while lies the road before us-
While hope and love go with us as a friend,
To weave our threads of life in matchless beauty,
And feel no vain regret when comes the end.
