Supervisor Dougherty and wife are vis iting their extensive cattle ranch on Oak Creek. #** Barb Wire for sale at Sam Hill’s Tin Shop, cheaper than ever before s-Jd in Prescott. **♦ J. L. Fisher, the well known live stock merchant, of Prescott, has purchased the material for erecting an iron building near his present location. Mr. Hugo Richards, one of the most prominent stockmen in Yavapai County, has returned from Signal, where he is ex tensively engaged in mining. A pleasant and enjoyable party was given by the Agua Fria round-up outfit at the hospitable residence of the Merritt brothers on Wednesday last. **# Del. Thome, who secured the govern ment beef contract at the Verde at the last letting, visited Prescott on Saturday last for a wagon load of supplies for rodeo ing purposes. *** Mr. King, of the firm of Fratt & King, the well known stock growers of the Verde, was in Prescott during the present we< k. He states that grazing in his sec tion a.t present is splendid. *** A' recently received letter from Hon. L. P. Nash, of Tonto Basin, states that stock interests in that section are enjoy ing a b<>om. Calf crop big, grazing splendid and water abundant. #*# The forcible entry and detainer case of Bullwinkle vs. Fryer et al. involving the possession to La Rue Spring near Flag staff was decided in favor of the plaintiff mi last Saturday. County Assessor More, who has re returned from a tax assessing trip through the Verde Valley and vicinity, reports stock as being in excellent condition, with all the rodeos in full swing. Major Wetherell, the efficient and genial manager of the Gosper Horse Asso ciation is preparing to ship two carloads of fine horses to St. Louis from the com pany’s range, on Ash Creek. *** Tom Shipp, one of the cattle kings of Mohave County, has e. tered into a con tract to furnish Southern California parties with seven hundred beef steers. The first shipment numbers 200 steers has been made from Peach Springs. **# Supervisor J’. D. Cook is down on bis ranch rounding up a lot of beef cattle. He intends to ship a train load shortly.to Kansas City. Should he fall short of that amount from his own herd, he wilt pur-i chase a sufficient number to complete the I amount. j ROOF AND HORN-PRESCOTT, ARIZON A. C. W. Beach, of the Kirkland Valley stock firm, while in Prescott during the present week informed us that the com pany, of which he is superintendent, had branded during the present rodeos in the neighborhood of one thousand calves. Mr. Beach states that the calf crop of the present season is the largest ever known in this portion of the Territory. The well known business firm of Kelly <fc Stephens, who have been experiment ing in raising rye on their farm near Prescott, state that it is the best hay crop that can be raised in this section of Ari zoda, as it grows faster than either barley or wheat and stands drought better. The crop on their farm at present averages five feet height. *** Arizona has cause to congratulate itself on its escape from the severe droughts which are creating such havoc among the herds of Texas and portions of New Mex ico. So far we have failed to hear of the death of a single animal in the Territory through such a cause, notwithstanding Arizona is- considered by many persons as the dryest portion of the United States. ♦** Messrs. Campbell & Baker, who re cently purchased an extensive tract of alfalfa grazing land in the Salt River Valley for the purpose of fattening their beef steers prior to shipment, have been forced to abandon the scheme for the present owing to the season being so far advanced as to m .ke it impracticable. They will probably try it again next year. #** Hon. John G. Campbell, who has just returned from an extensive business trip East in connection with his live stock in terests, reports that in Chicago, Kansas City and St. Louis the cattle market is unusually lively. In Kansas City, Mr. Campbell and his partner, Mr. Baker, disposed of several hundred head of fine beef steers, the price realized on the same being so satisfactory to the shippers that the firm are preparing to make several more large shipments. *** Shull & Austin, the enterprising and leading livery stable men of Prescott, have established a semi-weekly stage line between Prescott and Alexandra, Peck Mining District. Their wagons leave Monday and Friday mornings, returning on the following Tuesdays and Saturdays, lu addition to carrying passengers the line makes a specialty of delivering mail, freight; and express matter at Groom Creek, Hassayampa, Turkey Creek and all other way stations. Stage Superintendent Stewart, who has been identified with the mail service of the West since the time when “the mem ory of man runneth not to the contrary,” has secured the mail contract between Maricopa and Ash Fork, one of the larg est and most important in the Territory, to the satisfaction of the residents of the vast tract of Territory directly dependent on the route, all of whom have learned to swear by old Jim’s ability to get mail matter through in spite of h—l and high water. There are 392 cattle brands recorded in Cochise county, with several precincts to hear. from. George Fisk went to Lordsburg a few days since to inspect twenty-six Short I horn and Durham bulls, twos and threes, purchasedin Missouri for the Kansas Cat tle Company, of this county. At the same time he inspected thirty-seven year-1 ling Hereford bulls, which were being ' shipped by Wm. C. Huffman to Phenix. . These latter abe- came from Missouri and will undergo'a - course of feeding be-' fore being placed on the market. — Wilcox ' Stockman. i | RS^G. L.
