Harry Cowell spent a few days
in Phoenix this week on business.
Yesterday was red letter day and
bill collectors were abroad in the
land.
A. A. Ardath was out looking at
the new strike at the Ardath mine
Monday.
Acting Superintendent Sipes of
the Keystone went out to the mine
Tuesday on business.
Dr. Bell has lately installed an
operating chair with all the up-to
date improvements. Next,
Mr. Anderson, who has been
timbering for Dr. Perry, was in
town for a few days this week.
George Buxton made th,e town a
flying visit Thursday evening, go
ing to Congress Friday morning.
Angel Contreras has been doing
a rushing business the past week
putting in stoves and accessory fix
tures. .
Dr. Fleming staked off several
claims the early part of the week.
The doctor has the fever in real
earnest.
George Say res.,- who Alps been
mining near Tyson’s Wells for Dr.
Geer, has beer, in town this week
pn business.
Messrs. Upton, Sanders and
Black went to Octave and the Ricli
Hill section Wednesday on smel
ter business.
A hall suitable for dancing and
holding entertai njncnts would
be a paying investment for some
enterprising capitalist.
Geo. E. Sanders and President
Black of the Southern Smelting
company spent Thursday in Phoe
nix on business, returning Friday.
J. W. Archibald walked in from
the Garcia mine Wednesday, his
horse having been temporar
ily borrowed by some friend in
need.
Oro Grande is fast becoming
quite a camp, there now being eight
families living at the mine, besides
the numerous single men employed
there.
Mrs. Mooers has accepted a posi
tion with the Oro Grande Mining
company as cook, and assumed
charge of the culinary department
Wednesday.
Some snow fpll on the mount
ains north of here Tuesday, and
the temperature, as w r ell as the
spirits of men and wine all went
down together.
If there was such a thing as cash
ing the dreams which some of
our local mining experts have, it
would take a ten-mule team to
haul the bullion in.
Mr. and Mrs. Etter were visitors
at the Sahauro mine Sunday. As
far as we know Mr, Etter is the
only man in town besides the
News-Herald force who has not
staked a claim nearby or joining
the big silver strike.

This month will seal the fate
of many a turkey gobbler. Thanks
giving proclamations have not yet
been issued but - are soon to be ex
pected.
R. W. Baxter has been disturb
ing the native haunts of the lizardf*
this week by having the mesquite
brush cleared from his lots in the
vicinity of the postoffice.
Drs. Branch and Fleming have
entered into a contract with the
Oro Grande Mining Company and
will hereafter act as company doc
tors at that thriving camp.
The Oro Grande is noy taking
out about 100 tops of ore daily.
They already have enough ore on
the dump to keep a large stamp
mill running for some time.
Gates Fowler, a prominent Salt
River valley rancher, was in town
Wednesday, enroute to Octave and
the Colorado river district where
he expects to make some rich finds.
Thursday night was Hallowe’en,
which, lucklily comes but once a
year. The town was generally
quiet, but a few youngsters chased
around tor awhile committing
minor depredations.
The laborers on' the Catholic
church tired of working for the
Lord the early part of the week,
evidently believing in the Biblical
saying, “You cannot serve both
God and Mammon.”
Messrs. Woolner and Burson
went out to the Homestake mine
Tuesday. Mr. Woolner is the
owner of the Homestake and is
here for the purpose of examining
this very promising property.
A load of wood will be cheerful
ly taken on subscription at this
office. We are not intending to
start a wood yard, gentlemen; a
little stove wood to keep the ink
warm is all w.e want, so don’t all
come at once.

master Higlev, trainmaster Storey
and Mr. Walstrum, accompanied
by Mrs. Drake and daughters, pass
ed through yesterday morning in
a special attached to the north
bound freight.
Henry Wickenburg, Wjn. Scott
and E. R. Hall have located two
claims east of town about two
miles. Scott says they have the
biggest “blow out” of copper not
yet uncovered, and don’t care if
they do “blow in” a little silver
getting at it.
Plans are being consummated
for the erection of a Methodist
Amu-eii in Widcejibur 2 Rev. Tarr.
who has been here for some time,
is authorized by the mission board
to offer liberal help in money mat
ters as soon as an organization can
be effected and trustees elected.
Angel Contreras took Air. Black,
Geo. B. Upton and Geo. E. Sanders
out to the Vulture district Mon
day. These men are making a
comprehensive examination of all
the mines and prospects in this
vicinity with a view of securing
the establishment of a smelter here.
J. K. Murphy and wife, accom
panied by Miss Bryan, returned
Wednesday to the property being
developed by Mr. Murphy be
low town. Mr. Murphy has just
completed the erection of a four
room cottage in the Collins addi
tion and may decide to occupy it
before spring.
Several times during the past
week the hotels and lodging houses
were unable to accommodate the
large number of strangers who
were in town. There is room here
for another hotel as well as a de
mand for several cottages. Invest
ors would do well to build a few
rent houses here.
There is a possibility of Arizona
having rural free mail delivery on
what are now star routes, says the
Tucson Citizen. Edward J. Fuller,
assistant superintendent of the
railway mail service, was in Tucson
this week to arrange for new bids
for carrying the mail over star
routes. If rural free delivery is
installed on any of the present
routes it will prove a great conven
ience to sections of the country
where there are a great many min
ing camps.

Nall & Cohort, traveling photo
graphers, have been in town this
week shooting the citizens and
business houses of Wickenburg.
The gentlemen are first class artists
and leave tomorrow for Congress
where they will remain several
days taking viev/s around that fa
mous camp.
Dr. Bell and Dick Painter have
on exhibition some very rich spe
cimens of ore taken from a new
find which was made by them in
the vicinity of Sahauro. The ore
is similar in appearance to the
famous rock taken from ilie Sa
hauro, and looks as if there might
lie millions in it.
A. H. Carnage of the Denver
group has been in town this week
; purchasing lumber and supplies
preparatory to starting develop-
I ment work on this property. A
road is being built and as soon
as this is completed work will
be resumed on the tunne:. which is
now in about 100 feet.
Dave Alphin and a fire-eating
painter by the name o: Hooper
gave a Delsarte .exhibition Wed
nesday afternoon, but unfortunate
ly for the painter, he forgot to blow
fire in his excitement and Dave
captured first money. The paint-*
er later swore out a warrant charg
ing Dave with highway robbery
and assault. Judge Beyd threw
the case out of court, it being evi
dent that the painter was endeav
oring to abscond with some of
Dave’s hard-earned money, as well
as leaving an unpaid board bill be
hind.
Every newspaper man, says .an
exchange, has at one time or other
in his business experience, met the
man who “now takes more papers
than he can read.” He was in
town the other day. He wiped his
nose on the awning, tried to blow
out the electrie light at the hotel,
failed to light his ciggr on it, paid
25 cents for an almanac, put a
nickel in the slot at the postoffice
and kicked because the mail did
not appear; wanted to lick the
cashier because he closed at three
o’clock, and watched the clock sign
in front of the jewelry store wait
ing for it to strike, and still he
takes more papers than he can
read.
Hon. M. J. Riordan of Flagstaff
stopped here Tuesday on his return
from the statehood convention and
made us ,a most enjoyable visit.
“Mike” is one of the best known
and most popular men in Ariwma,
and in company with his brother,
T. M., and F. W. Sisson, operate at
Flagstaff one of the largest lumber
businesses in the southwest. Hav
ing heard much of this section late
ly, he came here to look over the
field with o view to future business
in his line, and expressed himself
as being very favorably impressed
with the outlook for a big camp
here as soon as a few more of the
mines are developed to a greater
extent.

A man who will sink a 700 foot
shaft in country rock, away from
ledge matter, is just the kind of a
person who could be expected to
take his company’s legal advertis
ing away from home and give to
an outside publication, especially
after promising it to the home pa
per. In both cases the work is
done in the wrong place and with
correspondingly poor results.
We mention this case merely to
call the attention of the public to
the fact tliat we are here for busi
ness and think we merit the good
will and support of the community
and when we say support we do not
mean to have you pat us on the
back and send to Phoenix or Pres
cott for your job printing and to
have your legal advertising done*
That kind of support does not
