letter of acceptance was issued today.
It in in part aa follows:
"Bimetallism cannot be secured by
independent action on our part. It
cannot be obtained by the opening o!
our mints to the unlimited coinage of
silver.
'Mexico and China tried the experi
ment. Mexico has the free coinage ef
diver and gold at a ratio slightly in
excess ot sixteen and a half ounces of
ilver to ounce of gold, and while her
mints are freely open to both metalp,
at that ratio, not a sinpls dollar in
gold bullion is coined and circul&'ed
ns money. Gold has bsen driven out
of circulation in these countries. Un
til international agreement is had, it is
the plain duly of the United States to
maintain the gold standard."
"For the first time since 1S6S, if
ever before, there is presented to the
American people this year a clear and
direct issue as to our monetary sys
tem, of vast importance in its effects,
and upon the right settlement of
which rests largely the financial hon
orand prosperity ot our country. It is
proposed by one wing of the demo
cratic party and their allies, the peo
ple's and silver parties, to inaugurste
the free and unlimited coinage of sil
ver by independent action on the
partol the United States at the ratio

purpose It a menace to our financial

involves great peril to the credit and
business oi the country.

destroyed Onlonogan yesterday orig
inated In a swamp jast south of the
Dkuiond Match company's mills. A
forty. mile gale swept the flames be
fore it and the planning mills, box
factory and immense dry kilns were
soon a mats of ashes. The lame then
descended on the bntires and resid
ence quarter of the city aud finally
lodged in 65,000,000 feet of tawed
