Gov't Report ABSOLUTELY PURE BELIEVES BOTH SIDES When Republicans and Demo crats Accuse Each Other. Tombstone, Arizona. Ed PROSKOfoB: My attention has been called to an article published in the Tucson Citizen, and reproduced in the Orb of September 18th. in aurwer to my letter published in the Pros pector of August 29th. Whether this artiolu was first pub- litheJ as an editorial or an alleged communication, I cannot tell, not hav ing seen Ibe Citiien, but in either cate it bears the unmistakable ear-marks of the Poit-Dispatcb, St. Louis; reform opinion of the editor of that paper. The gut of the article ii found in the following: "The facts set forth l.y Mr. Reilly are of themselves so suggeiltvo of cor ruption that, most of the actors in that drama being now dead, Mr. Reilly might charitably have omitted the hint of over persuasion and bribing, fortunately it to happens that the Republican party then in power and responsible for the legislation ol that congresi, i much alive today, proud ol it achievements. toaiing an hon- uralilr record with which it challenges coinparuon wun the record of any party of ai.y epoch of our history," etc. So the Citizen says in effect. If a party lias ever accomplished any good and glorious work I must not find fault with its bad work, nor try to re form such bad work, nor state the faota because such facts suggest "per suasion and bribery," and the men who did the work are dead. But this mode of reasoning i not original. It haa been used to sustsin every fraud, every imposition and every fetch that has cursed mankind sine the world began. And, Mr. Citizen, your opponents, thealledgtd Democrats, have for many years have used the same argument and are still using it, and prostituting the aames of Jefferion, Jackson, Ben ton and Josiab Wright to gain votes, and gel boodle, with fully as much efleot a your party are prostituting the names of Lineoln, Sarrison Sew ard and Blaine. I was not questioning the honesty of tho member of congress generally, nor was I looking for motives. I was merely stating facts and showing the results the fruits of bad laws. In the letter criticised, if I stated facts that ware suggestive of over "persuasion or bribery," the facts should bear the blame. And lean ad- mit, and have always been ready to admit, that the congress whose act created a bastard U.S. currency, the prolific source of national banks, bond slavery and industrial collapie, was composed in the main of coble Amer ican patriot, who deserve to be hon www uj wmir iaiiow men ; out 11 any man bolisves that John Sherman, who besbeeome a millionaire from a seaoel master by thirty-six years of service in making laws, was or is an boaeet patriot, I may respect his belief but I pity his credulity. The remainder of the article con sists of a strong indictment against the Democratic party, and its manage ment, aad when the Citizen or any gtlisr ilspubljcan organ show up the frauds, falsehood, and general vil lainies of the JHssocrailc maehine. and tha Desaoeratie organs with squal fervor denoumee the Republican ma- CONVENTION DA ITS.
