chial schools, amounting to nearly
$400,000.
C. W. I.ain,one of the wealthiest
land owners in Mexico, wan bitten on
the neck by a black fly. The poison
spread to all parts of the system. A
surgical operation failed to give relief
and he died.

birthday of F. H. Fitch was celebrated
in a pleasant manner. Mr. Fitch is
the well known and popular engineer

The first witness was his daughter,
upon whose perron the alleged crime
whs committed. During the testi
mony her mother tat by weeping
with her face in her handkerchief.
The accused sat by his counsel with
a smile on his face. He prompted his
counsel as to the questions to be asked
and appeared amused.

The Williams News hits a character
found in every community in the fol

Two men arrived from the gulf last
Satuiday ncd brought news et the
sloop Examiner. The boat has got as
far as San Luis Island in a somewhat
battered condition, having lest her
centerboard. The men aboard were
well and had plenty of provisions. A
stop was to be made at Angel Bay.
They are probably at Guaymas now,
barring accidents. Times.
The west bound overland train on
Wednesdsy night carried 39 negroes
who were en route to Sacramento.

Africa to this country. They were
dresed in the prevailing fashion of
the section of the dark continent
from which they caire, and the eyes
of the Tucsonites about the depot
were glued on them during their brief

Henry Salzman started into the ex
press husiiless yesterday about four
o'clock and two hours afterward the
busine km at a (lemnrslizing dis
count. The propelling tower of the
businos" end of the concern became
entangled in the meshes of the har
ness and began performing circus
tricks. After two circuits tho wagon
refused to go with tho performance
and something had to give way. The
shafts gave up rirt and other parte
followed. Henry is made of good
stuff, however, and will be in the field
again in a day or two to attend
promptly to the requirements of his
customers.

I will just say that Captain Hunter
was iu Fort Fillmore. I was lieuten

with a few men as a picket, and the

The California column did not come
into Tucson on the road that I ex
pected them : hence they got too close
lor my health, and 1 left.

prisoners at the time Lieutenant
