WEEKLY EPITAPH. TOMBSTONE, A. T., 8KITEJIBER 18, 1882. A IIUACnUCA PARADISE. A A nt ii nil Fori Conservatory l'ror. I.cimunii llotanUlnc- Somo months ago, it will be remem bered, wo noticed tho arrival ot Mr. and 3lrs. J. Q. Lemmon in this city, on their way to the Iluachucis. It has lone been believed that the canyons and defiles of theso mountains were natural conservator ies of flowers and ferns. Tho following graphic description wo find In a letter from Prof. Lemmon to tho Rural Press. It is dated Tanner's Canyon, August 23: "A week ago, whllo clambering up a high, narrow and very rocky ravine, n turn in its course suddenly revealed just before me a half-opened volume of nature's great library. It stood on cud, and was slightly Inclined backward against a high moun tain. Its sides were of syenite, limestone, granlto and quartz m superposed layers, capped with slate. I havo since conducted an oftlcor from the Post, experienced in measurements, to tho place, and obtained his judgment as to distances. We estimate tho hlght ot tho walls to be over 1500 feet, and tho extent of spread and depth to be each over 1000 ft. Vertical furrows traverse each page of the book, also horizontal ones. And the contents or tlic volume are on a par with its magnificence. Plants of the most robust form and biightest flowers cling to every ledge and peep out of every crevice. No sooner had I approached the pages than 1 ucscricd, for a marginal visjnette, a beautiful shield fern not seen before west of Texas. Across tho right hand page, near the bottom, proccedsd a line of whits-flowered shrubs, n new spo cles of leaphanla. Similarly along tho left a new draba. A hundred feefhigher the pages had for illustrations a largo and, raro aspldium on the left and a newspeciei of gymnolomia on tho right. Pulling myself up by the aid of trail log shrubs, I found, In tho next narrow rift, two more strango ferns. At about a thousand feet elevation tbrao more ferns appeared. The ascent was now almost vertical, but excitement steadiod hand and foot. Grasping the dependent bushes where possible, and after making a place for my fingers In tho rock clefts with my pick, I struggled on and up, dripping with perspiration, but greatly elated by the ferns and flowers discovered. About fifty feet from the top tho slato capstono jutted out several feet and forbade eicapo over the top, but it also displayed another strango fern. Sliding down with great peril, and several severe hurts, to a ledge about two-thirds tho hlght of the gorge, by good chance I discovered a sldo cn tranco from the west, a narrow, tortuous way often blocked with debris or guarded by a thorny bush, but still a passago along the lace of tho nearly vertical wall for 1000 feet to a place of safely. Next day Mrs. L. was conducted to this wonderful conservatory and admmlltcd by the side entrance. At every inward turn of the winding way her exclamations of delight wero uttered, but at tho outward curves tho shacr precipices of 1,000 feet below and 500 above, with a narrow way of only ono or two feet wide, often caused momentary hesitation. But tho glories of the inner vestibulo of ferns can always be seen -from those outer curvci, appearing nearer and nearer, and tho sight is too en chanting for botanist to resist. Premonitions of a sudden storm, such as are often experienced In the mountains of Arizona in August, now wero heard, and the long rolls of thunder reverberated down tho cavern's length in quick succes sion and increasing loudness; but a sweet voiced little bird hopped along just a few feet ahead, and seemed a siren to luro us on. Suffice It to say, the inner reccsi.es ot the conservatory were visited, more of their treasures secured, and then a quiet re treat was mado before a torrent dashed down that gorge carrying large trees and boulder, making a volume ol sound that could be heard for miles. ThU must be tho richest natural conser vatory in America, for in it we havo col lected twenty-six different species, many of which are new to Arizona, and perhaps somefbf. them new to science. Specimens of all the doubtful ones havo been sent on to Prof. Eaton, of Yale College for deter mination.' San Cnrlow Aotvs. We clip the following from the Globe Chronicle regarding nn interview with the recently appointed Indian Agent, Colonel P. P. Wilcox: "Weiound him to be an intelligent and agreeable gentleman, and found that his lcws on the Indian ques tion are entirely in accordance with thoso of our residents. Ho has lived on the frontier long enough to know that the Indian respects naught but foicc. The Judge states that In the management of the Apaches thero will be no jealousy between tho agency people and the troops, and they will act in pe'fect accord. In regard to passes the agtnt w ill isuo but few, and those but for limited periods and to tuist wortby ludlans. Iloth military and Apaches havo been notified that in case of an outbreak the agent docs not desire tho troops to make any prisoners, and has im pressed it upon tho Apacho mind that Crook, the man whom they most fear, Is now back, and leady to adopt the same vigorous tactics in which he was so suc cessful before." Though we uicinfaor of icmovlng the entire ueivntion from the Territory, we ht.utily endorse the above policy, if trkt!y carried out, as a decided improvement on tho present Mate of affairs. The Dean Itlcliiiioml l'nte-i.t. Cha. F. Hlne received n patent Wednes. day for the Dean Richmond mlno. This is one of tho most valuablo properties in ibis section of tho country and has been in dispute for some tlmo back. It is located within a mile of Charlaston, in a position easily approached. Itwas formcrlvknonn as the Old Uroncho, but tho present own ers came into possession and lcnamcd it the Dean Richmond somo time ago. Ap plication was made for a patent but the Old Broncho owneis adversed the claim. Tho matter went through the different channels, from tho local laud office, to the Secretary of tho Interior, and tho Rich mond won every turn. Yesterday the matter was finally completed by the arri val of a patent signed by Chester A. Arthur, President of the United States. THE COROXERSHIP. Opinions of a Correspondent. Editor Epitaph: At. this political trisis it behooves both political conventions to t-0 closely watch and guaid tho rights and individual liberties of the people as to merit at the ballot box n just and fair dis crimination. Theio is ho oflico so import ant to tho peoplo of CoohUo county, and yet so insignificant, so full of danger or protects o of cveiy light, so capable of Star-chamber iniquity, subornation of witnesses and jurors, so stealthy and assas. siu-liko of character and leputation as may bo under the office of Coroner bo made to prevent or protect a commonwealth in all the lights belonging to citizenship. It has been proven repeatedly throughout our government that a Coroner should be chosen from out tho ranks of tho masses of tho people and not fioni the tanks of a profession. Professional men think, act and li c so continually in ono groovo or channel of thought that they bcconio set, and predju diced und partial, nay, dangerous at times in their views of justice ami duty. It is our experience that a physician or doctor of medicine does not make so efficient, prompt and busincss-like.n jurist in matters perttiuing to tho Coroncrship duties, as ono taken from the mcicantilo or mechanical labor branch of life. A coroner has at times unlimited power, which, if swayed in the wrong direction, destroys lifu and happiness. He may summon his own creatures as jurors. He may order his examinations done by his friends. Ho may propound his own questions or sit in secret star chamber sessions, and so influence or diicct justice and light in any manner which may sub serve his interests or his enemies. When great elections como upon us, each party seeks to attract to itself all the 'strength which right and fairness '.warrants for suc cess. Then, let us in our nominations of men to hold the office of Coroner, avoid professional doctors and take some one from tho ranks of the people, who Swill protect tho rights ef all, and administer equal and exact justice. A house painter consumes forty eight minutes lighting his pipe; fifty five minutes in telling stories; two minutes in watching a kitchen girl; thirty-six minutes in binding up a soro finger; and quits work nine minutes before six.
