Mark Smith and Ben Goodrich made able spceclics, and thoroughly reviewed tlie history of the two parties in this county. Mess s. A "Wonderful Cave UlBcovcrdd lu the Mule .Ilouninlns-A Urrat Xutiin.l urio-lty Will ne Thorough y Explored in a Few Days Colonel Gordon, au old tune prospsctor and a very intelligent man arrived in town a few days ago. from the Mule mountains, wheic he hud been prospecting for several months past. The Colonel is a keen ob server, and can dcteiminc the nature of a natural curiosity, or a ledge of mineral with equul facility. Yesterday he gave an EriTArii repiescniaiivc particulars of the uiscovety of an extensive cavern near the loo.hillsof the Mule mountains, about a mile and a half from Sucldon's rauch. It is about COO yards southwest of the mam trail between heic and Bisbce, and noi more than twelve miles fiom the latter place, aud sixicen from here. The cave as accidentally discovered by two young men named Joliu Hilton and Bob Nelson, who were prospecting. The mouth of the cavern is about thtee feit and a half wide ny a foot and a half long, and coulinuts down filiecn feel about that size. It is not ihehiiudiwoik of man, us there is not tue slightest inuic.itiou that a pick, bar or drill was ever Used in opening it. It has eveiy indication of being a water foiniition, and Is ui-qucsttouubly a work of nature. On one side of the apciture a vein of high Iy mineralized rock sevctul inch es wide is plainly isible. The vein is crystallized and copper stained and gives indicitious of amounting to something handsome as it goes down. The cavern was discovered lust Saturday, and tae ledge immediately located. The men s-eeured the pkkct ropes attached to their saddles and attempte I to explore the cave by descending by mi ans of a rope, but h.iv ing no candles it was detet mined so ab.tii don the idea until the day alter. Sunday Mcsms. Uiltm and Nelson, accompanied by William Banning nnd Colonel Gordon, visited the cvc, and Hilton wasloweieil by means of a rope. The cave tuus down it au incline of forty-tivc degrees, and is uniform in size for riltem feit. It thin opens out several feit and continues unt orm to a depth of twenty-live feet, when .t opens into an immense cavetn, the di. ntensionsof wuich arcat present unknown. The foot wall continues uniform nil tin way down, apparently, but the opposite side of the cavern could not be pencilled. Along catcjo pole was let down to Air Hilton and he Hid a lighted candle on Ihe end of It, an J by that means tiled t. gnzc on the other side, bill could not saliate his .otiosity. There was noi a lo no rock on die wall, and every th.ng seemed peifect lie was lowered down to a depth of lony li ct, and there found another oaicn brandling oil" behind the main chamber. Exploring 't with his light he found it lo consist ol a solitary chamber about sixteen feet square, with perpendicular walls. That being the extent of his rope, he was hauled to the tip. He reponed seeing frequent signs of mtueial, while below, but could not determine the extent. It was decided to lower Mr. Nel-on, wiili his pockets haded with stones, which he w is diiecieJ to drop when he leached Ihe end of tlie to,c, and listen, in order to dtt-riatne the depth of the cavern by the ssund. Ho diopped several of the stones successively, and heard t.iem roll dowu wards until hccoitld hear no longer. They certainly had not stiuek bo torn for seven ty or eighty feci, or ho would have he nd them. He next tiicd tu fling a stone against die opposite wall, and was in a degrie successful, and thinks so far as he could regulate the distance by sound, that it was uot les than sixiy feel away. Col. Gordon says th'it a party are preparing to thoroughly explore the cave ou the ICih ol til s month. Tho shaft for the first fiitecn feet wheic it is narrow will bj opened out so as to admit a bucket, a windlass will be erected, aud a couple of men lowered. Calcium lights wi.l also be si cured in oi der to throw lurid light on the extensive subtcatranean chambers. The discovery caused much excit. meut in Bisbce and it ismorcllian ptobilile than an extens ve crowd will be on hand ou the sixteenth. The CeleMtial Victor.
