WEEKLY EPITAPH. TOMBSTONE, A1UZONA, OCTOHEIt, 21, 1S8J a ji,x;i: at Tin: mmixi:ks. Tlio democratio nominees have now boon before tlio people Tor one month, and nearly all of thorn have given tho pubho an opportunity to judge of thoir qualifications for the offices to which they aspire. In its make-up the ticket 13 thoroughly rep rcsentativo of all seotions of tho county, and so wiso was tho action of tho nominating convention tlut evory namo on the tickot adds to its strength ns a whole. The only chargo tho oppouencs of Larkin Carr are able to bring against him is that of being n railroad man. Not withstanding its repetition by the Ncaglo organ with a dogreo of malig nant mendacity seldom witnosscd in any campaign, this charge has been. completely refuted to tho satisfaction of every intelligent voter in the county. Mr. Carr is a man in every way qualified for the olfice of sheriff. His judgment, energy, bravory and integrity aro admitted by all, and not oven tho mud-slinging champion ot tho independent candidate has dared to question them. As a business man Mr. Uarr has few equals in the county, and ho will exerciso in the discharge of his official dutios that executive ability which his successful business career his demonstrated that ho pos sesses in so largo a degree. Ot' A. T. Jones, the nominee for recorder, it is scarcely necessary to speak. Ho is personally known by nearly every voter In tho county. His lionesiy and efficiency are equally well known, and on thesa qualifica tions he confidently relies for elec tion. Ben Goodrich, the nominee for treasurer, stands at the head of his profession in Tombstone, and is in every way fitted to perform tho du ties of the office to which he will as auredly bo elected. His scrupulous honesty will inspiro perfect confi dence in his stewardship of the finan ces of the county, whilo his courteous bearing and genial manner have se cured tho friendship and good-will of all who know him, and made his de feat next to an impossibility. Marcus A. Smith, candidate for district attornoy, although a young man, has already reached tho front rank of his chosen profession. Ho is a read', fluent speaker, well read in tho law, and a persistent student. Ho wi 1 guard faithfully the interest-. of tho people, and reflect honor upon the county. B. L. Peel, tho nominee for pro bate judge, is an old resident of tho county, and known in overv mining camp and settlement. Ho is most emphatically tho man for tho position. The office is an important one, which requires the ripe judgment, thorough knowlcdgo of tho law, and unswerv ing integrity of which Judge Peel is the admitted possessor. Tho legislative ticket could scarcely bo improved by an exhaust ive search throughout the broad do main of the county. J. II. Tevis will prove a leader in the next Territor ial council f whom Cochise can well be proud. He is thoroughly iden tified with tlio interests of the coun ty, and fully understands her needs. Messis. Morkrty, Wardwell and Duncan aro men of good ability, mid will provo faithful and devoted reprcsentatives, for of thoir election by a round majority there is now scarce ly a doubt. For county superrisors, the Dein ocratic nominees are certainly uuex ceptionable. The office is to the taxpaycis one of tho most important in the county. L. V. Blinn, J. C. Fall and John liullis arc men of property and influence in their re spective communities. They aro all successful business men, and em inently qualified to guard tho affair and shapotthc destiny of our young nd vigorous county. Tho nominees for coroner and pub lic administrator, Pat Holland and Alexis Freeman, are both gentlemen against whom nothing evil can be said. They will poll tho full strength Ot tho party, and their election h consequently assured. As beforo stated, for one month liavo the Democratic nominees been subjected to the earnest scrutiny of tho public, and their characters and records have undergone a searching investigation at tho hands of their political opponents. Hut as yet ab solutely nothing has been alleged against any individual nominee. As a whole, the ticct is above roproach, and each day adds to its strength among the intelligent, thinking votors of the rountv. A POuriCAL fiplit often makes or ruins a man, ntid democrats who to day aro tr ing1 to lireak up tlio party through their support for a so-called independent are forever and over ruining their pilitical pto pects not only in Cochiho but in the territory. TO TAXPAVRIIN AXI VOTER. It is claimed by the Neagle organ and a sad tuno it plays, by the way, wheezy and full of stops that its candidate is tho representative of law and justice; that his election means peace and order to the com munity; that as the chief executive ofiicor of the county there will be no violation of tho law but what will bo followed by strict and impartial action on his part in suppressing, ar resting and- prosecu ing the trans gressors. So much for "indeponent" promises. Bat what do wo see? A man, a chronic violator of the law, he is supposed to interpret, takes foroible possession ot a lot on one of the principal streets of town. IIo willfully and maliciously destroys tho property of another, and pro ceeds with his work with a pistol in hi j pocket and a shotgun by his side. Does the law and order candidato ur rest him for cairying concealed weapons; for disturbing the peace; for threatening to take life? Does his officers protect tho injured patty's property when requested to do so? Do they arrest a uuui who publicly violates the law of tho city which thoy are paid to enforce? No, they do nothing but stand by and smile as tho work of destruction goes on . With such facts before them, do tho honest, law abiding, sensible citi zons and voters for one moment doubt but his officers were acting in con formity, if not under commands of the man who expects to elect him to the high and responsible office of Sherift of this county? Is it not a shameful and humiliating reflection upon the pretentions of a man whoso only claim for the office is that he will en force the law and seo justice done to all? Is it not a direct contradio tion to all the promises and pledges made by his organ? Does it not prove him to bo wholly unfit for tho office to which ho has tin pretentions to aspire, and will not his election bring upon this prosperous district tlio enactment of another drama of blood, of robberies, of miscellaneous assassinations? Can any peacable, law-abiding proporty-holder and tax payer, not belonging to his clique, hopo or expect to be profited in his legitimate business? Can he e'xpeot, in case of n similar outrage, that tho sheriff will interpose and proteot his property until the law decides tho quostion of ownership? To all of these questions the uninterrupted and o itrageous transaction of last Mon day replies in tho negative. His back er, his followers, his strikers, Ins eliquo will bo permitted as thoy are now to carry concealed weapons, to appropriate the propeity of other , under the sanction, if not tho protec tion of his officers, to bully, to insult, to in tho onls of his organ '-run the county." Wo ask tho serious consideration of all tax-payers to this subject, and wo will bide the ro suit, which cannot but bo in tho in terest of un upright, Iionor.iblo man. a property-holder and tax-payer, a man of action and courage, a gentle man and a christian, Larkin W. Carr. JIJHJV!U:.V. Tho Xeaglo organ makes the sis seition that the Epitaph his attenip ted "to insult a certain class of citi zens by covert allusions to their race and creed." This is, to say tho least, a mistake, and we challenge the pro dtiction of any article, under tin present management, relleciing on the "race and creed" nf any nation ulity or class of citizens. It woulii come with very poor grace, a& out paternal ancestor came from "across the seas," and as o roliy-ion, our 01 school days and the eailier part ol our lifo was passed under the guid ance of a branch of the order of the Christian Uroihers, and for them and their "creed" wc have profound rev ercuce. As to the other charge, re garding "an crs and slurs at the min ers of Cochise," it is altrnpst too ah surb to -notice. There aro a number of mitieis in this camp with whom wo delved n other mines, and it was thus, laboring together for our daily bread, that '"j lea-tud to honor and respect them, for among them wc found men tiue and honorable; for whom ire should ever have love and respect. Ir thero had been but 1,500 votes registered in Cochiso Ncaglo would lutvo stood a good chance of election. At 2000 ho had one chance in a thousand, at 2,500 ho stood none At o,()00 he will bo beaten by oUd majority. Every vote over 2,000 i it nail in his political coffin. Way side demagogues, who ate trying to go in with tho tide, make your esti mato and see if the Epitaph is not correct.
