WEEKLY EPITAPH.
TOMBSTONE, AMZON'A. NOVEMBER 7. 183
YICTOKY AtM7Jti:i,
fc.aoh day brings additional cvi.
donees that a sweeping victory for
the domocrauo ticket in this county
will be tho result ot next Tuesday's
ballot-boxing. Democrats, who one
week ago, were faint hearted and
doubtful of the result, aro now se
renely confident of tho triumphant
election of tho entire ticket. There
aro several causes for this remarkable
ohango whioh has taken place in one
short week. A closo canvass of tho
city has revealed tho fact that among
tho miners of tho camp, where it is
claimed tV.e democratic disaffection
was greatest, the ticket from top to
bottom will poll t'10 full strength of
tho party. For every democratic
voto tho "independent" caudida'e
for sheriff receives among this
class of oar citizens, the dem
ocratic nominee will draw at
least one from his republi
can opponent. In addition to this, a
larjre number of business men of re
publican proclivities, disgusted at tho
shuffling, half-hearted support of
their party organ, and realizing that
defeat is inevitable, will vote tho
stra ght democratic ticket. Further
more, the people regardless of party,
as tho day on which they will be
called upon to voto approaches, have
taken tho trouble to ascertain tho
record and character ot each candi
date. This careful scrutiny has in
each interest redounded to tho bone
fit of the democratic nominees, whose
fitness for the offices to which they
aspire cannot be questioned even by
their political opponents. All these
causes combined render tho outcome
easy to foretell by the least ob:erv
ing, and that next Tuesday will ush
er in a grand democratic victory in
Cochise county, no intelligc.it, well
nformed person doubts.
A IIE.YII OIVB WAY.'
The "half-breed independent or
gan, referring to Neagle's letter to
Carr, gives tho whole thing away.
It says, "Mr. Carr's duty was plain
when ho received the letter. He
should have sought Mr. Nttagle, and
found whether it was a fact or a for
gery." Tlu truth of the whole- thing
is simply this: Neagle wanted to sell
out to Carr. He thought Carr, upon
rrccipt of tho letter, would go to him
an 1 say, "Neagle, I won't draw out
of tho fight, but if you will, I will
tnio that you and your friends aro
provided for." But thuy counted
without their host. L. W. Carr is
to-day the strongest man in tho field,
and Neagle realizing this, knowing
ho has no chance for election, thought
to sccuro something out of tho wreck,
and now that tho infamous plan has
been exposod, they aty like tho thief
in the cro-vd, "forgery.'1 They have
shown their hands and have nothing
for their trouble but tho deserved
contempt of tho people, which thoy
will emphatically express on elec
tion. 'hum. OUT.-'
Wo have knun for some time
that the leaders of tho "lialf.breed-
independent" movement wanted to
sell out, but hardly expected their
organ would get tho start of them
and sell the wholo business. Wo
have not heard tho amount paid, but
there can bo no doubt but that the
bargain has been consummated,as the
organ has the following in its issue
of tho 31st, which all sensible men
recognize as applying with peculiar
fitness a.id force to the late, so-calltd
"independent" gang:
Tliej U.ivo sold out the puty to which
they claim allegiance, b.isuiy uutrayul the
trust lepnstd in ilicm, and joined li.md
witli their political enemies. Hut tlii"c
jobbers ami incksdeis have U'ckoueil with
out their host. Honest anil eousuientinu
democrats will refuse to fol'ow the lead ot
a handful of political guerrillas or pliui
coulhlfiiLC in ihe utii-r.im.-ts of their to
called newspaper. Tliey will icluso lo
vote lor a m m who lias not a tingle quail
ty to recommend linn, except ii bu hit
liientUliip for outlaws mid tliosu who
make a living without honest-work
The "half-breed" organ, realizing
that I.. V. Oarris the st.-ongost can.
didate in tho field for tho office of
sheiiff, have dropped their fight
against Ward and aro turning theii
batteries against Carr. Thoy hope,
through misrepresentations and
laldohoods to drag him down to theii
level and then dofeat hint. The
realize that thio is a forlorn hope, aim
will hesitate at nothing, howevet
false or low, to win a fight, which
they could never gain by fair, honor
able means. Hut it's too late. Tin
people aio fully aroused to tho great
damage Neaglo't, olect:on wouk'
cause to our material prosperity, ant
have decided to vote for L. V. Carr,
an honorable, upiight man, a piuper
ty holder and tax payer, who:e inter
est is coexistent wi'li thoirs, thai
peace and justice to nil may pit-vail.
So it's really a fact that tho Ropub
lican has sold out to the "half-breed
indepenents."
It is currently reported that Nea
glo has threatened to " make certain
sons of b got out in the street "'
in caso ho is defeated. This is
ono of tho old bulldozing
tactics, and more certain than any
thing elso will defeat him on election
day. Tho people, tho law-abiding
citizens, taxpayers and property own
ers do not want any more bloodshed.
They want peace and quiet, a just
ana impartial administration of the
laws, and to secure such they pro
poso to elect men to office who,
while bravo, will have no petty or
personal spites to revenge, tho ac
complishment of which will disturb
tho poaco and possibly inaugurate
tho old reign of terror. As sheriff
of this county, L. V. Carr will dis
charge the duties of tho office in
such a manner as to give perfect
satisfaction, insuring a continuation
of the prosperity wo aro now enjoy
ing. Tin: following from tho Tucson
Star is so applicable in every respect
to this county that wo reproduce it:
It is not 10 much cnlhiisinui as real
wmk thai is needed from now oti to ihe
end ot tlic canv.iss The Democrats are
all hopeful and ccnfulent Lvinti hae
sliupul themselves largely to our advan
tage, and there is nothing so much to be
le'irijil m that apathy and itiilifleicncc
which comes from over ci ntldencc. That
we will catry the county now, hy at least
two hundrid majotitv, seems to be centr
ally coueedid. The republicans are friht
enid and uscasy. Tiicy are employing
iciy expedient known to Ihe inott expcit
politioia-js to recover the ground they have
lost. It depends on the democrats to say
whether they shall lie successiui or not.
If ihe parly, and every person who owes
It fidelity, wil. turn in and work as they
ought, the democratic colors will be co
red to a dicisive vieloiy. The count) is
all iiji.il. Hete in the cMy ihe real ligui
will have to he madi, nd it M here thai
the demo' ralic strength should be concen
trated for a final and detemilncd effort. It
is aa old adaee, and a tuie one, that the
bitllc is not alwas to the strong nor the
race to the suilt" It i3 meaut to tcich
fidelity to cffbi-U; pcrs'sttfnt work. That
is the real secret ol all success.
Tub Neagle "half-breed indepen
dent" organ says Neagle never wrote
a letter to L. W, Carr, aiking him to
withdraw from tho canvass. Every
one who has seen the letter, and are
at all acquainted with Neagle's sig
nature believe bo wrote it. But to
settle it wo aro willing to submit the
letter and half a doz.'n of Neagle's
signatures made during the last year
for the inspection of three disinter
ested experts and abide by their
decision. Tho contents of the letter
aro characteiistie, as ho calls Ward a
" son of a " twice in a page and
a half. That's enough to convict
him. It's so natural.
Tin: Boston 1'ost sms-: Boston is
not alone in making an effort for the
restoration of the Irish language. A
similar effort is being made in Ire
land. A periodical is to bo published
there, devoted exclusively to the cul
tivation of the language, which, what
ever elso may bo said of it, possesses
a rich literature of its own, and is of
great interest to the scholar and anti
quarian. The 'half-breed" organ says, "Tho
miners in this camp know that when
tho attempt was made to reduce
wages in the Crown Point mine, Vir
ginia City, Davo Ncaglo was the
first man to raise his voico against
it." Be kind enough to state what
position Davo Neagle and "Judge"
Murphy took tegarding the employ
ment of Chinese at Panamint.
Neagle cannot point to half a doz
en men in Cochise county who pay
$100 worth of taxes who will voto
for him. Property holders want a
man who will protect their propeity
impartially without fear or favor,
and they rcalizo Neagle is too strong
a partisan to bo fair. Cair is theii
choice.
"Their hour lii's come, ana next
Novembcrthe people will bury them
and tho outlaws candidate whom
thoy champion in tho same political
grave." Correct, old son, and wo
aro j;lad to see that you fully realize
your doom.
Tin: Star says the fact that Capt.
Tevis was tho first advocato of Ar -
tesian wells for the desert and first
demonstrated that they wefo possiblo
and practicable ought to count
largely in his favor at tho coming
election in Cochise county. It is
men of mind, capable, practicable
and eneigetiv that we need in the
legislatuic.
Sinci: the Earp shoo got on the
N'eaglo foot, the " half breed " or
gan hasn't had much to say about
Ward being an Earp man, or Carr
belonging to the railroad comptny.
Fisom all reports, the Oury boom
in northern Arzona boomoth greater
than ever, and Lis majority in the
tcnitory can not be less than a
thousand.
And still the Oury boom continues.
There is hardly a prominent republi
can in Arizona but what will vote for
tho brave, "honorable old pioneer "
Three cheers for L. V. Carr, the
next sheriff of Cochise county.
