Some weeks ago we suggested to
our people that a wholesome support
of our Sabbath school by the parents

than half a dozen officers of the

they could pinch The saying comes

The futility of such a request ought

CLOSE QUESTIONING
Continued from page one
goats Apache was finished at 10
oclock and Cochise was entered
upon Ed Hughes assessor of that
county being called as tho party to
whom questions should be centered
As Cochise was entered upon Har
ry Heap member and William
Stephens chairman of the Yavapai
board arrived both having been
absent at the opening of the session
The Cochise rolls show 5000 acres
assessed at one dollar an acre to a
cattle company Hughes explained
this land wns a class known as cat
claw possessing much rock and
hill There is considerable more
such cat claw in Cochise than we
have on the roll said Hughes The
highest assessed irrigated land in
Cochise is a twenty acre tract at
100 in the Huochuca mountains
known as orchard land I dont
believe any irrigated land in Cochise
could be classed the same as irrigated
land in Maricopa county owing to
the uncertainty of water sad John
Rock a member of the Cochise
board A total of 216125 acres of
uncultivated land was assessed at
four dollars In 1912 uncultivated
land was assessed at 190 showing
a raise vin valuation of about two
and three fifths Dry farms in Sul
phur Springs valley were assessed
at three dollars per acre
Tho question of assessing dry
farms brought about a lengthy dis
cussion in which Campbell reported
such farms had Leen assessed in
Yavapai at 250 per acre D D
Phjllip3 assessor of Graham re
ported the dry farms in the Graham
section of the Sulphur Springs val
ley were assessed at three five and
seven dollars and Gray reported
the same kind of farms were asses
sed at from 20 to 100 in Coconino
county Hughes replied he would
like to take some of the gentlemen
down and show them some of the
so called dry farms in Cochise
Conditions are different in Cochise
and Coconino said one member
There is a lot of snow and moisture
in Coconino farmers of that county
depending altogether on rain and
snow there being no irrigation at
all On the dry farms of Cochise
rain and snows seldom fall showing
that the dry farmer of the north
has a much better chance than the
southern dry farmer
Land on the C A ranch was
assessed at 50 per acre and the
maximum in that of the St David
valley was fifty dollars replied
Hughes when questioned by Frank
Luke a member of the Maricopa
board In Cochise in 1918 the total
assessed valuation of town and city
lots amounted to3891835 against
1781042 in 1912 a raise of two
and one sixth
The Copper Queen store is consid
ered the most valuable piece of
property in Bisbee It was assessed
at 600 per front foot its total as
sessed valuation being 71928 It
was assessed to the Copper Queen
Mining Company The Copper Queen
store in Douglas ib also considered
the most valuable piece of property
in that city Banks of Cochise were
assessed at more than twice that os
1912 The assessment roI show
