Dimmer Rules
The new automobile dimmer
- law is simple and may be easily
complied with by all motorists
It is not necessary that any spec
ial kind of lens be used or that
any part of the lens be frosted or
painted provided that the light
is set at such an angle that its
beam complies with the law The
law as it applies to the head

No lights of more than 32
candle power shall be used on
any motor vehicle and all lights
-in excess of four candle power
equipped with reflectors shall bo
arranged designed diffused or
deflected so that a point 75 feet
or more ahead of the lamps rise
42 inches above the level surface
onwhich the vehicle stands All
additional or supplemental lights
including movable spotlights or
searchlights shall comply with
the above restrictions and the
rays of light from any such
searchlight or spotlight shall at
rio time extend to the left of the
center of the highway
JUl spotlights used upon motor
vehicles and tractors shall be so
constructed or arranged that no
portion of the top of the beam or
light shall rise or shall be capable
of being raised by any person oc
cupying any portion of such vehi
cle to a point above the level
surface upon which the vehicle
stands and 100 feet directly ahead
of such vehicle except that when
beam of light is swung 30 de
grees to the left or right of the
straight ahead position no limita
tion is placed on height to which
to which the beam may be raised
No spotlight shall be used on or
attached to any vehicle other
than a motor vehicle or tractor
Spotlights or lights other than
headlights the direction of which
is under the control of any occu
pant of the vehicle

Lyceum and Chautauqua Asso

Association af Portland Oregon
This is the first general meet
ing which has been held by the
board since the Ellison White Bu
reau placed their business on a
atnctiy non profit basis which
went into effect February 11
1921 when articles of incorpora
tion were filed at Salem Oregon
Among other matters which
will be taken up at this meeting
perhaps that of most interest to
the public at large will be the
nomination of candidates to run
for the office of trustee of the
board The Ellison White offices
at Portland are daily receiving
lotters from residents of the dis
tricts interested proposing names
for the consideration of the board
at their October 20th meeting
and it is the desire of the asso
ciation that anyone having a
name to submit may feel free to
do so The two trusteesi to be
elected during the coming year
are those representing Districts
No 1 and No 2 comprising the
states of Louisiana Texas Ari
zona New Mexico and Califor
nia Three candidates Will he
nominated and placed upon the
ballot from each district and
every Chautauqua Lyceum and
Festival season ticket holder in
the territory named will be given
an opportunity to cast their vote
for their favorite candidate

world enlisted in the corps dur
ing the fiscal year ending June
30 1921 according to an official
report compiled by Marine Corps
Headquarters at Washington
The total American born num
bered 11735 and of this number
New York state contributed 1096
Pennsylvania 926 Illinois 847 and
fOhio 549 the remainder coming
from every state of the Union
The alien born recruits who are
required to have either their first
or full citizenship papers num
bered llZb and represented over
fifty foreign nationalities All
the European countries are rep-
resented in the report and there
are recruits from Java Mada
gascar Egypt Syria and from
several of the Latin American
republics
