STOP AT CROSSINGS
SAYS STATE BOARD
Effectlvo at once the Arizona cor
poration commission has issued a gen
eral order requiring the drivers of
all motor vehicles engaged in the
transportation of passengers pr prop
erty for hire to stop their machines
before crossing over any steam rail
road track excopt whoro such cross
ings are guarded by gates or a flag
man in tho employ of tho railroad
company Tho order revokes all for
mer orders Issued requiring such
stops
Tho order IsBiied Is a modification
of the general order Issued several
months ago by tho commission which
required the drivers of such auto
mobiles to stop before all crossings
whether guarded or not The present
order requires that the machines be
stopped not less than 50 feet nor more
than 75 feet from tho nearest rail

NEW LENS ARRIVES
SAFELY IN TUCSON
Arrival of the costly lens for the
Steward Observatory after more than
a year of delay for various causes
was announced last week by Professor
A E Douglas director of tho Insti
tution Installation will bo completed
as rapidly as possible
The great lens he stated comprises
one large mirror and four smaller
ones for the purpose of gaining a
variety of astronomical effects The
larger mirror Is six Inches in thick
ness and 37 Inches in diameter
The lens was shipped from Pitts
burg Pa where it was polished and
according to the director will magni
fy astronomical objects to a slzQ five
times greater than the present equip
ment available The mirrors wore
found to be In perfect condition when
unpacked here stated the director
The Steward Observatory was the
gift to the university of tho late Mrs
Lavina Steward of Tucson who pre
sented to the institution the sum of
