Younjstcr Waited Long to Find Flaw
in Day of Joy.
The cireu3 had come to town, and
there was a tiny boy, not more than
three years old, who was too excited
to eat or Bleep, so filled was he with
visions of the wonders that might be
seen. So his father (who was a big
boy himself) decided' to take the baby
to an afternoon performance, and the
two get off together.
It was a gorgeous afternoon, and
the two came home with exciting tales
of the marvels they had beheld.
Never had there been such a show or
such animals. Language was quite
Inadequate to the occasion it - had
been a thing of pure, golden Joy.
At alx o'clock the little fellow was
having his supper, when he suddouly
stopped, his mouth full of porridge
and the spoon sticking out from it at
defiant angle, and burst into a roar,
deafening, heart broken, and inarticu
late, the spoon dropping with a clat
ter to the table.
His father was puzzled and asked
various questions an to possible stom
ach ache, stray pins, etc., meeting
with no answer whatever. Then he
remonstrated:
"Why. Jacky," he said, "do you
think this is nice of you? Father has
taken you to the circus, and Just think
of all the things you've seen! The
polar bear, and the elephants and "
Dut Jacky's rage at this became un
governable, and he found words.
"The elephant" he walled, "the
elephant wasn't wasn't half big
enough!"
DOGS CLIMBED UP ICY WALL.
St. Bernards Saved from What Looked
Like Certain Death.
There was sorrow In the home of
Hruno hronlch, says a tourist In a
letter from Switzerland to a Glasgow
paper, when It was learned there that
the three beautiful St. Bernard dogs,
Dlna, Medea and Solna. which had
aided in many rescues, had been lost
over a anowcovered precipice near
Ilochschneeberg. They were with the
party in search of the three moun
taineers who were lost a few days be
fore. They slipped off the Ice-covered
llennluensteig and landed on a
rock which overhung a deep chasm.
From this they could not go down or
vo, and the helpless animals howled
pitifully. The animals were given up
for lost, and for that reason the re
joicing was great when at dawn the
next day the dogs appeared at the
rtaiimgartnerhaus and barked for ad
mission. Investigation showed that
the dogs had worked their way up
against the almost perpendicular snow
and Ice wall.

The minister was hurrying toward
his church, the Sunday morning's
service being near, when ho was ac
costed by ouo of his congregation,
whom, In his haste, he had Just passed

sermon this morning," said this parish
ioner, after the first greetings.
"Well, I hope I shall fulfill your ex

Mean Man Defeated for Honor That
He Coveted.
A letter written by a woman decided
a contest for the office of president
of a men's club In New York a few
days ago. There were two candidates
for the place; one a clerk in a New
York financial institution, whose
young wife had been a working girl,
the other a wealthy manufacturer.
with a reputation among his neigh
bors for "closeness." The day before
the election each member of the lit
tie club received a typewritten letter,
signed by a woman whom all knew,
which began with these words: "If
what I write you Is not true. It Is
libel." Then she said that the club
should not honor Its "meanest man"
and related some amusing incidents to
demonstrate that she was not mis
taken In her estimate of the man. In
closing she wrote, "what do you think
of a man who has his barn painted
and says to his wife: 'That's your
birthday present' If you can afford to
elect that kind of a man for your
president, go ahead!" The alleged
"meanest man" was defeated.
"Soupiana Dementia."
Every time John Jenks of Seattle,
Wash., sees soup he goes crazy.
Vermicelli, consomme, mulligatawny,
oxtail or Just bean soup It s all the
same to John. Every time he sees
soup, or a friend mentions soup, he
shrieks and howls, and if he is of
fered it at table he grabs the dish with
a maniacal yell and throws It up In
the air. When It's noodles Jenks rubs
'em In his hair, and when it's potato
he washes his face In it and yells like
a fiend. This Is the peculiar case agi
tating Seattle; and Is the ground for a
divorce applied for by Mrs. Sbehezerde
Jenks who fears John's mania will
spread. The courts have the matter
under advisement and the doctors are
diagnosing this case of "soupiana de
mentia." Meantime polite folks, when
John Jenks Is Invited to dine, make
the cat eat the soup downmatrs safe
away from all suggestion to Mr. Jenks.

Gen. Weaver recently recommended
soft water for longevity, but the very
