Mm. with a party of friends arrived here last week for the entire summer, and after passing their first night at the Merriconeag House, went the next day TO her summer home on Haskell's island, where she will stay until late In the season. Mr. Woe d ruff I shell of St. Louis. Mo., arrived at Harpswell during the past week and is a guest at the Mc Candless cottage. He will remain for the entire summer season in Casco Bay. The Rev. Henry R. Rose and family, of Mewark, N. J., were recent arrivals here and will occupy their cottage in the Auburn colony from now on. They expect to stay until late in the summer and are anticipating a most delight ful vacation in every way. Miss Jane Ripley of Boston. Mass.. was a guest last week of Mrs. H. G. Lord at her cottage here. She re turned to her home last Saturday after having experienced a most de lightful stay here. Mr. EL S. Paul of Lewiston. who with his wife and children occupy a cottage here during the summer months, has ordered a new automobile which he expects to use extensively in making trips to the many parts of the Pine Tree State, which offer advant ages to the automobillst. Mr. and Mrs. W. K. Cana and Mis* '"Ethel Dana, have been spending a few <mys this week at their cottage in the -Yuburn colony. They will prot ljowever. stay for a while longer in tneir home in Westbrook before com ing here for good. Mr. and Mrs. Logan and family of Montreal. Can., arrived here last week and will occupy a cottage during the entire summer season. AU are confi dently expecting a most enjoyable vacation here. Mr. Logan is the vice president of the Grand Trunk railway, j R. S. Davis Co., Portland, carries a complete line of cottage and piazza furnishings. Adv. Mr. Osceola Currier of Newark. N. J., is expired to arrive here this week for his summer's outing and will be warmly welcomed by his friends here, as he has bea$ a summer resident cf Harpswell for many years. Dr. and .Mrs. Floyd McEwen and fam ily of Newark. N. J., arrive this week from New Jersey to occupy their cot-, tage here for the summer. They have been here in former years and will probably remain until late in the sum mer. On Friday night of last week the Misses Alice McCandless and Jane Ripley gave a clambake on the beach which was enjoyed by about a dozen of their friends. The night was a perfect one and everythil; was pro-' pitious for causing everyone to have a jolly evening. After the clams had been baked and eaten with all proper ceremony, the party adjourned to the McCandless cottage where ice cream and light refreshments were served. The tennis court at the Auburn col ony Is being used extensively by the young people among the summer col ony as usual, and every day they may bi seen enjoying themselves in this manner. The court is fully the equal of any in the State and is kept in per-1 feet condition. Many exciting sets have been played on it so fsr, which were full of interest to both specta tors snd participants. -Mrs. £. B. Pendlebury of Philadel phia, is again spending her summer vacation at Harpswell and as formerly U occupying the cozy "Inglenook" cottage. Mrs. Howard Teague and Mrs. Frank Pickering of Lewiston. arrived at Harpswell on Tuesday and opened their pretty summer residence here for the season. They are expecting a most delightful summer. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Merrill of Lew iston. arrive this week to spend the month of July at Harpswell. Miss Alice Wandtke of Lewiston. arrive this week to visit Miss Ruth Morey for a month. Miss Wandtke is a class-mate of Miss -Morey at Bates college. Colonel Joseph Gildersleeve. Mr. Nelson Gildersleeve snd Miss Caro line Gildersleeve of Brooklyn. N. >. came down for the summer during the past week and during their stay will cccupy the Burr cottage on Hurri cane Ridge. Mr. and Mrs. John Pierce of Lewis ton. arrived here last week for a two weeks sojourn. They are looking for ward to a most delightful and charm ing outing at 'Harpswell. Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Ames of Auburn, arrived here recently and will spend two weeks among the charms of Cas co Bay before returning home. 1 Cousins Island Mrs. Frederick Glazier of Medford. is occupying the Oaks cottage. With her for a three rreeks sojourn is Mrs. S. B. Glazier. They are entertaining for a week Mrs. C. B. Bartiett. Miss Helen Bartiett and Mr. Philip Bart iett of Winchester, Mass. Last week Mr. and Mrs. C. P. Chan dler with their daughter. Marion and son Donald, went to Gloucester for a short stay. They returned Saturday bringing with them iMr. and Mrs. Van Carl of White Rock. Conn., where he was lo cated as pastor until 1899. The "Packer" cottage this season < has been taken by Mrs. Leon M. Des Uets and family of Brookllne, Mass.. and Mrs. M. V. Dodge and son of Burns. Ore. On Saturday they will b-» joined by their mother. Mrs. M. L. Thompson of Brighton, for the sum mer. The ladles, particularly Mrs. Dodge, are very enthusiastic over the beauties of Casco Bay. the greenness of the trees, and the freshness of the landscape especially, appealing to her after the never ending monotony of the sage brush in her home state. Her husband is a noted civil engineer employed by the State government in solving the great irrigation prob-1 lems of Oregon. Avalon cottage was opened for the season last Friday, when Mr. and Mrs. Winfleld Prime and family arrived to spend the summer at their island home from Winchester. Mass. Be sides Mr. and Mrs. Prime those at the cottage are Miss Evelyn and Mr. Sel wyn Prime. Mrs. Fontaine and her daughter. Miss Ruby Fontaine. Mrs. J. W. Garness arrived with her ( family. June 15. to spend the summer. They are as usual at the Hamilton cottage and have with them Miss Margaret Anderson of Wakefleld. who is convalescing in the invigorating air of Casco Bay. after a recent Illness. Mrs. Garness has been entertaining for a week. Mr. and Mrs E L. Hill and son. George, of Wakefleld. Mass.. at the cottage. Three delightful young ladles. Miss Julian Neely. Miss Sarah Collins and , Miss Helen Booth, all of Philadelphia.! are occupying for the season the "Sea 1 Breeze" cottage near Harmony Hill. This Is their first visit to Cousin's Inland and they express themselves »s well pleased with the resort, and anticipate a very enjoyable vacation while exploring the delightful island and surroundings. Mrs. 8. P. Hamilton and family., an occupying the "Barnacle" cottage. They are among the oldeat Hummer residents who are seen each year here and thla Is their aerenth season In their present location. The 5th of June saw the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Day to occupy their "Osocosy" cottage until September. With them came Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Day and son. Maater Henry Brighton, to enjoy a few weeks by the sea. Mr. and Mrs. 8. J. Bissett and fam ily of Maiden. Mass. with Mrs. George Conrad are at the Bissett summer home "Day Break" for the season. Visiting them for a short time Is Mr. Charles Babcock. also of Mslden. Re cently Master Kenneth Bissett re ceived as a present from his father a handsome thirteen foot row boat which hss been named "Joe". The boy received the boat aa a reward for learning to swim, and Is looking for ward with a great deal of pleasure to msny hours of fun on the water thla summer. The Edgecliff cottage was the scene of a most enjoyable house party re cently when Miss Marion Doyle of Yarmouth entertained a party of fourteen girl friends for a week. Mrs. O. H. Doyle and Mrs. Fitts honored the party as cha:r:rons. The time passed ah to quickly with trips in the Doyle's speedy yacht and swimming, rowing or picnics in the inviting woods added to the pleasure of the outing. A few of the guests were: Miss Mil dred and Mable Doyle of Yarmouth. Miss Elinore Poole. Miss Lyda Webb. Miss Phyllis Sturtevant. Mlas Mary Sturtovam and Miss Ethel Doughty all of Cumberland. Mrs. Charles Downs of Boston. Mass.. Is having a fine bungalow built on her property here. Mr. Charles Duran of East Bcston has the contract. Mrs. Harry flicker of Woodford St.. Woodfords. is the guest of Mrs. C. M. Bowker, at Keepcool cottage. Mr. and Mrs. W. ff. Norton and daughter, Dorothy, of Woodfords, were guests at the Bignough cottage over Sunday. Mrs. Ira ff. Morrison of Dew Drop fnir cottage was In Portland. Monday. Mr. Alex Jake of Boston. Mass.. while out fishing one day last week, had the misfortune to lose a valuable diamond ring. Mrs. R. ff. Talbot who has been visiting friends in Boston, has re turned home. Littlejohns Is. What promises to be a most de lightful summer is at last here, and on Littlejohn's at least its arrival is hailed with delight. Already a num ber of cottages are occupied and the others will be as soon as July 4th with its attendent celebration has parsed. Several large social events have already been planned to occur during the season, notably a lawn party and also a big clambake, but as noth ing definite hss as yet been decided upon, the details must be announced later. However, the few details that have leaked out give promise of a royal good time for all attending these functions. A most worthy organization and one which should receive the enthusiastic support of every summer visitor this year Is the Littlejohn's Improvement Society. This enterprising organiza tion has accomplished much valuable work since last season. The money raised by the lawn party- and Field Day, held by the Society last summer, has been wisely ezpended In improv ing the condition of the Island roads snd In securing a public float, which was a long felt want. This landln stage has been located at the West end of the Island where It Is handy to the majority of cottages, and Is* much apprec?c?ed by all the boat owners. There is opportunity for more good work Hke this, and It Is hoped that the regular cottagers will lend their aid as formerly, and do their share in interesting newcomers of this season In the efforts of this com mendable society. At the White cottage are Mrs. Agnes C. Newhsll and Ml** I.aur^ Nt-whall of Boston for the summer months. They have as their guest for a few weeks Miss Daisy E. Welsh, also of Boston. Miss Newhall has been an slmost constant visitor to Little John's for over fifteen yeara, the moat convincing proof that she Is one of the islsnd's strongest admirers. Mrs. M. H. Ellms and Mrs. J. Bart lett Rollins of Melrose Highlands. Mass.. left for home after two weeks spent at the Bllms cottage where they enjoyed the early summer beauties of Caaco Bay, Mr. Sidney T. Pierce with Miss Evelyn Lord of Dorchester, Mass.. are stay ing* at the Cook cottage for a short vacation. Chebeague Mr. and Mrs. John Hoben and family of Springfield, Mass., who for many seasons past have been regular sum mer visitors at Chebeague, are this year occupying Miss McKees' cottage on Eastern Point The Hobens have al ways taken a lively interest in every thing pertaining to the summer col ony, and after having missed them one year from Chebeague their many friends are hastening to welcome their coming once more. Mr. and Mrs. George Sweetser have been occupying their summer heme "Outlook" since June 11, and such is the attraction Che beague has for them that they are again planning to remain until late in the fall as in previous years, before returning to their home in Wakefield. Dr. and Mrs. N. D. Johnson with their two daughters. Maud Johnson Warren (Maud Richmond) and Miss Irene Johnson, of Waltham. are again occupying their cottage on the South Shore. Mrs. Julius Chrlatensen on Thurs day Joined her two sons. Charles and John, at the Green cottage near East ern Landing, which the family will occupy for the season. On Sunday Mr. Percy Shaw of New York arrived to join his family who are summering at the Webber cottage. Mr. Shaw considers himself fortunate in that he will be able to remain until August, enjoying the quiet life of Che be ague. Mr. Shaw is on the staff of the New York American. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Daniells of Xewtonvllle. Mass.. with their daugh ter, Mildred and sons. John and Franklin, are in the "Barnacle'* cot tage for their first summer in Casco Bay. Miss Mildred Daniells leaves Monday to become a member of Miss Darrow's camp for girls in the beau tiful mountains of New Hampshire. The Republicans of the island rolled up a majority of 49 for their candidate for the State Representative nomina tion. Clinton M. Hamilton, at the re cent primaries. Mr. Hamilton was op posed by Mr. Rowe of Cumberland, but carried the district which includes Falmouth and won the nomination. Rowe ran ten ahead in Cumberland town and the vote of Falmouth split even. Chebeague's big vote for Mr. Hamilton sweeping him In a winner. If It Is possible to elect the Republican nominee this fall. Mr. Hamilton will be the strongest candidate that party could iKmslbly put up. He always gets a large number of Democratic votes on Chebeague and has three times won before. The result will be close this year, though the district Is normally 50 to 100 Democratic. R. H. Cleaves Is offering the best in groceries, meats and all table supplies.
