We received a very nice present,
ftae other day, from a very nico lady
living near Winchester. The present
was nothing more or less than a bush
sl of the biggest sweet . potatos we
ever saw. Mrs. B. F. McHeheesent

Well, we don't intend to give our
potatoes away, by no means. We in
tend to keep 'em right here in our of
fice and roast 'em of nights when no
one is about, and when wo take them

break open, and while they are hot,

have said butter, and we haint got
Any. . Shucks I it's a poor way to live,

all convenient. Then one is prepared
to' devour potatos. As it is, wo must
break open our nice potatos on an old
poplar table, with no other cover than
a host of exchanges and a few sheets
of blotteJ foolscap, an inkstand, and a
few hard-looking pen-'. No knife but
the one we carry in our pocket, and no
hotter at all, oooh ! what a life! We
never before felt the want of a better
one. Well, we can truthfully say
that those are the (inest potatos we
rer saw, and, Mrs. McGchce, we are
very thankful. Maybe some one will
end us a cask of cider to drink with
tjem. If so, won't we live !
At the Cnrrick Academy, a male
school in this place, under the charge
f Messrs. .Syle,r and Warner, is a rule
that iio scholar shall visit the grocery.
It 8 rather anew rule to us, and one
which was not in vogue when we were
living the happy school boy's days.
But is it not a most, excellent rule?
And does it not display a greater care
on the part of the teachers for the
moral culture of children than many
of the parents of those same children
Seem to exercise? We are inclined to
think so when we notice from our
window of nights, und sec little boys,
not ten or even eight years old, enter
ing the grocery door, allowed by their
parents to "come down town" alter
night and visit as seductive a place as
k grocery. Much honor then to the
School master who will adopt a rule
to save our little boys from such an
nd as must befal them if they lounge
bout a grocery, where drunkenness
ad drinking are so frequent. But if
the parent can not or docs not excr
else b regard for his children after
the day is Jone and the teacher is at
home, of what avail is the rule?
Alas! we fear that though the rule is
so good it must have not only the au
thority of the teacher but of the par
eat too. If the parent proves recre
ant, no wonder, nor much sympathy
does he deserve, if his son should bring
him down in sorrow to his grave
The mind of a little boy is suscepti
ble very susceptible to impressions,
aMoh! how all important that those
impressions be good ones. But can
light come out of darkness? Can a
bpy be impressed with noble or happy
fiews pr feelings when surrounded by
Jhoirowd to be found at a grocery1.
Sorely some parents do not know what
a liquor grocery is, else they would
l&alrj their children avoid it as they
Woutd a copper head. But thank
fortr je, that we have teachers who
ara willing and brave enough to adopt
and enforce a rule which tends to keep
boyt aloof from the demoralization
connected with a whisky-shop. We
cannot believe that any of God's crea
tor were "born to be lost," yet, to see
the way in which some parents ailow
their , offspring to grow up, our faith
is almost shaken.
Parents, keep your children at home
of Mights, and you may save not only
(hem but yourselves much, trouble
hereafter, besides, enable the teachers
la qjnestion to carry into better effect
the good rale they have adopted.
