WINC1IKSTER: THURSDAY EVENING, DEC'R 23. Christmas ia now close upon us. Par ties will be in vogue, and if health and time permit, we (hall be ourelf, disposed, if not anxious, to join the throng meet our mole friends and converse with the 'gentler lex" on the various topkt ofthe day, and watch the graceful trip of the 'light, lantastic too." But before these ."parties are indulged in, we submit to our Voung friends the following thoughts "which we desire them to ponder well and profit by. Latk Hodhs." Late" and "early" ore1 relative forms, and thercforecannot, with- n a Certain limit, fix a uniformity of houro tot 0cial intercourse. But lliat, with the fullest allowance for individual circum itaOCt that could reasonably be askod, the hours at which most of our social par Vies begin and end, involve an outrage ur.o:i tha physical health, to sny nothing 'of the moral, we think nobody will deny. What these are, in what are called "fash ionable circles," may bo inferred Irom the circumstance Mated to us by a lady friend that on going recently to a mere "socia ble," as it was misnamed, at nine o'clock ho had "the mortification of finding her self the first lady present!" When she would have been the last one may readi ly ba guessed. Look at our balls. We find the "ball," proper, opening about nine or ten o'clock, and closing at from three to four! Mean while, a hearty supper ol all sous of indi gestible things, mixed together in the stomach, made voracious by tlio fatigue of dancing, aided by exhaustion from loss of sleep, is ponaken of say at from twelve to one o'clock! Then tlio severe exercise of dancing, perhaps every sett, .and the still severer exercise ofthe waltz or the polka, is suffered to follow upon the engorgement of the stomach, without intermission! Only think of it! Could .anything but evil came of such palpable -violation of thelawsof health? Did these assemblies begin at seven and end at elev en o'clock, or twelve at the very latest, the "governor" of ihe household could go after the young folks, if not with them, with soma expectation of being fit for buainosa next day. Then many a busi jjess man, who is utterly deprived of all social enjoyment under the present perni cious system, could occasionally join in the aocial pany without difficulty. A few Sabbaths since, we remember to have heard, at the C. P. Church in our .town, a most excellent sermmon by Dr. jBaird, the principal force of which was directed against the ugly habit of using profane language. Belore the remem brance of (hat appropriate and excellent sermon dies away, we have ti revivified .by reading the following stray scrap which -art get from a newspaper exchange; Frofanitv. In the use of profane words no idea ia to be expressed, no ob ject to be attained, no end secured, no ear 'to be pleased, no appetite to be adminis tered to, no passion to be fed. no title to 'be acquired, no wealth to be earned, no possible good, either real or imagined is had in view. They mean nothing. They ore wicked cheats, playing a gnme of decep tion, attempting to palm olFa blustering sound, for a substantial thought. Profanity is surely a good witness of a terrible dearth of wisdom, frightful scar city of ideas. Nor will any one pretend : thai there is any good in profanity; for be raides being an arrant cheat, it is an idle -and wicked use of the name ofthe great est Being in the universe; the best and truest friend of every human creature.
