sV- I-"-""'.V' ' " -ft- .. . . She toiMC pleural Oar paper is considerably l;liiul time this week, but wo could not help it. We have Imfii niclt for a week, barely able to keep up, nnd nnythin cl.se tlmn in good niriis. Liko nil tithrr pernons, wo find tlm liuiivm beurl bubjuotto depressions of Ming, without any real cnuse, and incapa ble of beinj,' forever blithesome. Wo might have thrown together our paper in comnioii stjle nnd got it out on the regular day of publication, but we havp, too much pride, and too much regard for the judgment of our readers, to issue any but a goad num ber, even if a little late, A good one or none at all. We attended, last week, the debate on the Cuba question between the scholars of Messrs. Syler, Warner ami Peterson, teachers in the. Carrick Academy. The. disputants were Jo seph I'Vancus Thos. Alexander, John Francis, M. C. Forbes, Cirorgo Corn nnd Marion Ueunelt. F.ach one ar gued his point in a clear and forcible manner, and several of them showed great oratorical powers. As an evi dence lhat to us they were interesting as well as able in their remarks, we found ourself several limes believing almost the arguments of those whose positions were at variance, with our own individual views; but whi n the opposite side spoke, we were brought back and more folly impressed w ith the truth, expediency and justice ol those views in regard to the acquisi tion of Cuba. Besides the, debate, .several original and .selected orations were delivered, which evidenced that they had been under the supervision of able and ac coniplislied tutors. At the close it beautiful address was delivered by Mr. Peterson, one of the teachers. He made it brief, however, on account of the. lateness of the hour. The President of the Academv, Dr. Wallace Estill, then announeed the resignation of Mr. Syler, Professor of Mathematics, and stated that his place Would be supplied by the beginning of next session. The resignation of ( Mr. Syler was deeply regn ttid by both patrons and students, yet I he re gret is much ameliorated from the fact that he rccigns only to take charge of j the scholar's mind in another sphere j in our town that he will still be with j Tub (iioi'S.
