He left here thirty years ago.' Mr. R J. rUuele IWt ) Turner has We have heretofore written so much bout the necessity of good roads ; have so often urged prompt and liberal ac tion upon our County Court for the en- forcemeat of all Uwa lutended to l etter our roads and have gone away hack to the days of Englaud, where Macauley speaks of the oi vilizing influence of good roads, and the influence they exert in the way of introducing settlers and en hanoing the value of property, that we reel like keeping silent on the subject. But we are so saddened at the sight of our roads iu Franklin county that we are constrained to copy the following from the Clarksville (Tenti.) Tobacco Leaf. Montgomery county has far Let tor roads than Franklin, and yet the ed itor of the Tobacco Leaf is not satisfied. He wants the roads improved while the weather is favorable, and adds : " The roads will do well enouuh now. but when the winter comes they will be :.. i:.! i- -i . iu oudii vunumuii u U w BiiilOBl ml- passahle unless work is done nu them between uow and fall. Nothing adds more to the value of lands, or to the profits of a farm, than good roads." Give us better Mads, and more aud butter bridges iu Franklin county, and furtns would be worth al most twice as much. As it is, our roads are bad enough iu summer time. In winter time they are called roads by way of courtesy. If our eyes have deceived us not there is scarcely a station on any railroad in Tennessee that does not show a number of all kinds of agricultural implements, aud we are persuaded that our farmers will have paid out their earnings in the way of implements. But it is pleasant, to know that high-priced machines do not find ready sale. Patents on ma chines that helped the manufacturers and patentees to make fifty ercent. are so numerous that competition that great leveller has brought down prices. Now, let the farmer he sure to lakegood care of his machines, by oiling them and protecting them against the weather Prohibition. We like and heartily endorse the sen timeut expressed in the resolutions of fered by Col. A. S. Colyar at the late ! Prohibition Convention in Nashville, to the effect that the Prohibitionists "want a constitutional amendment, to be sub mitted to the people, under the coiutitv been confined for sometime withrheu- tion," .this amendment to embody the mutism, but we are glad to learn that! principle of Prohibition, but that it iie is improving. j should not in any sense be made a party ihut suits the Home Jour- Dog and Sheep.
