the revenues from customs were 150
078758 yet during the distressing
free trade period of95 96 the same
revenues were 150000000 and 160
000000 respectively and in the last
darned years the excess of expenditures
over receipts was 42000000 and 25
000000 respectively From 95 to 97
inclusive no war the average annual
expenditures of the government were
about 360000000 For the year end
ing June 30 98 the expenditures were
443000000 including 83000000 war
expenses charged up to that time and
the receipts were 402847000 includ
ing 64651000 received from the sale
of the Pacific railways A simple pro
cess of subtraction shows that the de
ficiency under the Dingley bill was
over 22000000 the first year This
explains why wo will be paying war
taxes many moons hence

the authorities to procure bucter was
paid for at the rate of 11 cents per

during the years 1896 and -1897 There
was 5906446 less taxes paid into the
state treasury than was paid during
the years 1894 95 yet the reform ad
ministracion reduced the state debt by
77180053 What then becomes of
Judge Hay wards argument that Mc
Kinley prosperity had enabled the
people to pay more taxes so the state
could pay its deDts
It is reported that several prominent
Texas cattlemen are arranging to start
a big cattle ranch in Cuba
Nearly all of the thirty loads of cows
and heifers at Omaha Tuesday were
western stock and prices were 510c
lower according to quality common to
medium grades suffering worst Bulls
and stags also fell off but veal calves
were in active demand
The stock season for the railroads
seems to be closing unusually early
this year We are informed by a man
who is1 quite prominent in stock circles
and ho may Ije considered good au
thority on such matters that not more
than 80 cars are expected for shipment

we learn that the supply of cattle that
day exceeded receipts for the same day
last week 310 cars 8466 head arriv
ing About 25 loads of corn fed beef
and 30 loads of cow stuff were includ
ed and killers figured out from forty
to fifty loads of beef among the grass
ers the balance of the receipts except
for a trainload of southern cattle direct
to a slaughterer consisting of stockers
and feeders making it one of the lar
gest supplies of the spa3on

tors A great many Englishmen are

ica says the Homestead and they
are bringing a good knowledge of the
business to the woik and are conse
quently making a better quality than
formerly Their freight rates are
higher it is true but their cost of pro
duction is lower and the difference is
beginning to make itself felt
Lighter receipts of cattle as com
pared with one and two years ago are
now the almost universal rule and it
is this fact that makes present prices
and the general quietness in the trade
so inexplicable The supply lighter
exports fully up to and often in excess
of those of corresponding years and
from one and a half to three millions
greater population than one and two
years ago are factors that ought to
make for higher prices aud marked ac
tivity in the markets that these things
are wanting indicates a loose screw

It seems to us that the owners of
feeding cattle and the feeders them
selves are pretty far apart in their
views on the ultimate price of cattle
Some time ago there was a genaral
belief that the corn crop was going to
be immense and owners figured ac
cordingly Later on it was reported
that a season of scarcity was at hand
and the demand and prices fell off in
proportion At present the crops are
reported fair but we do not find buy
ers and owners getting together yet on
their views To us it seems that with
the reported scarcity of marketable
stock prices are bound to rise

ter we glean the following bits of in
formation
Usually at this season of the year
the banks of te south and west are
heavy borrowers in JNew York and the
shipment of currency to the interior
usually exceeds 30000000 This
year there is very little of that class of
borrowing in Xew York and only
about 3000000 of currency has been
sent from there to move the crops
As the number of cattle beiijg pre
pared for the late winter months is
small commission firms at the stock
yards are advising their country pa
trons to buy heavy feeders that can be
made ready at that time
Ster stock in northwestern Iowa
sells at i to 1 25 in the hand ot the
farners and steer calves are extremely
high
At the present time Texas and Col
orado seem to be leading off in intro
ducing pure breeds of beef cattle
Such cattle come high but breeders
know that they will make substantial
profits by buying the best stock to
breed from
