Since writing from Minneapolis , on the 21st , I came on to Winne- peg , Canada < : , remaining there a day and findiisg it a beautiful city of about 120,000 inhabitants , with streets about twice as wide as those we have at home. . I was particularly , struck with their cleanliness. My next sto'p was at Carberry. Manitoba , a prosperoous little city in a flourishing farming com- munity. The land looked gohd to me and I was buncoed for three- quarters of a section. I saw one quarter which laid close [ into the town which was sold for 18,000 , and another half section which brought 36000. . My land is four miles out from the town. Goingon from Carberry , my 'next stop was at Brandon , a city of 20,000 , with electric lights and street cars. I left Brandon : on Tuesday morning in a snowstorm , with the snow lying about 18 inch- es deep , on the ground. The snow kept getting less and less , and by the time we reached Moose Jaw , in Saskatchewan Province , we were out of the snow entirely and had struck a rain storm. Moose Jaw is a great farming : ' community and - - has about 20,000 people. From here west the " cli- mate kept getting milder until I . reached the great natural gas city i of MedicineHat : ! in sunny Alberta. : i There the thermometer was up to 48 and I found I was clear out of the snow belt with reports that farmers were starting to disc just south of here. Medicine Hat owns the gas field which it operates as a municipal franchise , selling the product at five cents per thousand cubic feet. All the citizens use it in their houses. for lighting and heat. There are three big ; brick plants here and the largest sewer pipe factory in Canada who use the gas extravagantly to burn their product. All are operated by American capital and I found yankees growing on every bush about the city. This bright , little city owns its own water works and sewerage system and is as up- to-date a place as you could wish to see. One thing that impressed me was that no preparations were made for winter amongst the ranchers. They put up no hay / for winter feeding and let their cattle and horses remain in the open. There are no sheds. , I learn that Medicine Hat has been for years the center of the great- est cattle and horse raising district in Canada and the ranchers have been trying to hold the farmers out. But the Americans have now secured quite a hold o.n the farm lands and the wheat crop this .year , averaged between 30 and 40 bush- els per acre , with oats 40 to 50. Land runs in price from § S to $20 per acre , according to nearness to railway. Down home when we got bad weather we blamed it on Medicine Hat , but if we got more of the Medicine Hat stuff we would be a great deal better off. The fine climate attracts lots of people to this . place. The folks from down our way who have' came ' up here say it is the finest ever and Professor CampbelJ of Lincoln is running a demonstration farm for the government , a mile 3 c or so out of town. . From here I expe'ct , to go on to . Calgary and. talp a' look at the rnn 'itrb1tntl. thfte ! , and tfofen I will , . . - . . . . . . . t , : . . . 8 -a , Sale Prices. , I See the merchandise in our window this week at special sale prices , .
