Williams received telegram yesterday afternoon •onveying the sadd news of the: death of his father at the family home in Rushford, N. Y. Deceas ed had suffered from hardening »f the arteries for about three years and during the past year waf practically helpless, so that the news was not unexpected. The fire alarm was gounde Sunday just before noon. A small shed in the rear of the house occupied, by Miss Katie Kurth caught fire, presumably from spontaneous combustion. The fire was squelched befor the building had been entirely burned, or the blaze communi cated to other nearby outbuild ings. D. D. Farmer was out from Mitchell Saturday to look after his land about six miles north West of the city and visit with friends briefly He is enthusias tic over the outlook for this «fctibn and states that it is his intention, when' his lease to* a fjurm near Mitchell expires, to move here with his family and again make this his home. Nelson ou Friday afternoon, May 17th. Mr. and Mrs. R. V.' Millstead have occupied the Walpole pro perty moving there the latter part of last week. The Elbon branch of the Red Cross will give a dance at the Axel Pearson barn, one mile west of Elbon, on Friday evening. May 24th, to whjch all are cor dially invited. Philip orchestra will furnish the music. Drs. Ramsey and Mir hart were at Kadoka Tuesday, meet ing with the other members of the medical advisory board, and considering a large number of cases of registered men that Jiad been certified up to them. The three year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ericksen, living near Pedro, was kicked in the foce anl badly injured. Ilis mother yesterday morning by a horse brought him to the city im mediately for medical treatment. The fire Sunday in the west part of the city destroyed about fortyfive feet of the telephone cable. A. W. Blazer, cable repair man for the telephone company, was here Monday and made the repairs, which was some job. The cable contains fifty small wires. O. G. Tracy, of Belmont, Iowa, arrived Monday and will assist 0. L. Anderson, county agent, in his work. Mr, Tracy has been as signed to this county by the gov eminent under the emergency ag ricultural act and receives his pay from the government directly The people of Hilland feel very grateful to Attorney Alvin Wag goner, who acted as auctioneer at the basket social held there last Friday evening. They say Wag is a comer'' if he sticks to the auctioneer business, which we are privately informed he will not do. Prof, and Mrs. E. D. Dean will go to Albert Lea, Minn., the com ing school year. He has ac ceptcd the position of teacher of history and economics in the high school of that city. Dean was tendered a position on the faculty but has decided not to teach for awhile. Mr. and Mrs. John M. Ronan and children have arrived here from Mitchell to' make their home and are moving into the Peshek cottage. They were ac companied by Mose Lacy, Mrs. Ronan's father. Mr. Ronan has large land and stock interests feouth of here and is also leasor of several thousand acres on the Cheyenne reservation, where he is running a large amount of s$ock. Commissioner E. A. The Belle Fourche Bee contains an announcement of the death of Mrs. J. K. Welsh, a pioneer of the Black Hills, where she has resided since 1876. She is the -mother of Mrs. ,H. C. Rilenholl, who with Mr. Ruenholl visited at the home of his parents near Elbon last fall. Prof. O. C. VanCamp has ac cepted the superintendency of the schools at Flandreau for the coming year, at a salary of *1700. This school is one of the strongest in the state and has an enrollment of about 700, with nearly 175 in the high school. Mrs. Van Camp does not intend to teach the coming year. Tuesday morning at the resi dence of Rev. and Mrs. O. E. Tell, southeast of the city, oc curred the wedding of S. E. Jor dan and Miss Letta Allen, both of this city, Rev. Tell officiating. The couple were attended only by the necessary witnesses. Both of the contracting parties are well and favorably known in the ity. Mr. Jordan has a ranch on Medicine creek, fifteen miles northeast of here, where they will make their home. The best wishes of many friends are ex tendde to them. The affairs of the old city council were closed up at the regular meeting of that body Monday evening, and the reins .of government turned over to Mayor Will R. Walpole and the new councilmen. The following appointments were made: Alvin Waggoner, auditor H. L. Brown, attorney R. V. Millstead, asses sor Will R. Walpole, "park commissioner." Regarding the lat ter appointment, we are inform ed that the matter ot making the land east of the city hall a park in fact ipstead of in name only has been discussed every spring, at the installation of a new government, getting only thait far. It remains to be seen whether such condition will con tinue under our new- and genial mayor. The Junior class of 1918 has passed the law for all Junior classes to come that the 2nd of May be apron and overall day and that this day be fittingly ob served. Miriam Riddell has returned to school again. Class Day exercises will be given in about two weeks by the Senior class. There are thirteen! so the exercises ought to be something different than ever before. The juniors had another sur prise this morning, but as usual it was just a test in history. The office of state senator is an important one and should be given serious consideration by the voters in the primary elec tion.At this time,when the world war has brought up so many mat* ters that need the attention of legislators, we can be none too careful in seeing that just the right sort of a man is sent to the state capitol during the se9" sion. His sympathies should be with the nation in this crisis, and he should be so equiped that he will be able to do effective work one who can make him self understood, whether on the floor of the senate chamber or in committee work, is necessary one who. by previous legislative experience and party affiliation is close to the administration ought to be more effective than one who lacks such qualifica tions.For the reason -just named we believe the rpueblican vot ers should and will nominate R A.
