Shopping on the Sea,
People after a long sea voyage are
naturally eager for fresh fruit. A
lady passenger on board one of the
1 aeifie mail steamships, informs us
how her desire was gratified while
th ® ves sel "as at anchor five miles
oft the little Mexican coast town of
Mazatlan. Ihe natives came on in
boats, bringing tempting supplies of
the produce of the country.
Here were huge clusters of banan
as, plucked freshly from the tall trees
which we could see (juite plainly on
the laud, of the most, exquisite fla
vor ; pineapples, such as can only be
ripened under a warm, mellow trop
ical sun; limes of pleasant acidity,
0 suggestive of cool lemonade; oranges,
too large to hold comfortably in your
hand unless it be a large one. and co
coaunts, melons and mangoes in the
greatest profusion.
That is what the merchants offered
ws. Now how did we buy them?
The distance between us was about
the same that it would be if we had
-been standing at the upper window
of an ordinary two-storied house, and
the boatman on the ground, and there
was such a clamour of voices of men
and women calling their wares and
the that it was quite deafening
at first.
Hut when the trade was fairly be
gun, it was really quite easy and
pleasant, and certainly was a novel
way of going shopping. .Suppose we
wish some bananas. We look about
until we find a man who has ripe ones,
attract his attention, as you would
that of a horse car criver, and call
out, • Banana—here; ” and be an
swers in a queer Mexican fashion :
" Ba-nan-a, yes."
“ How much ?”
11 One bunch—fifteen cent. "
’• Yon send them up. "
Then he puts his fruit in a light
wicker basket, or twine bag, to the
handle of which a long rope is attaeh
- cd. and throws one end of the rone
to us. If we are skillful enough we
catch it the first time, but probably
not, for the distance is considerable,
and it often becomes quite exciting to
watch the attempts of purchasers to
get their goods.
One young lady of our party nearly
fell overboard when reaching for the
rope. But when it is once secured,
we gently draw up the bag or basket,
take out the fruit and put in the
money, toss it down in the boat quite
carefully, lest the money be lost.
Now wo may like some of the cu
rious necklaces which the women
have to sell. If so. we’shall do well
to wait till it is nearly time for the
steamer to - leave, as prices diminish
rapidly in proportion to the time for
making sales.
A Scientific Explanation,
The cat, be it remembered, is more
addicted to electricity than any other
animal, except the electric eel, and
hence is peculiarly susceptible to the
influence of the earth currents. So
long as the cat walks over fences
running from north to south his axis
is -'coincident with the direction of
these-currents. They pass smoothly
through Ins spinal column, and be
yond stimulating his mind and tail,
they have no perceptible effect upon
him. When, however, he tries to
walk on a fence built parallel to the
equator, his private axis becomes
perpendicular to the earth-currents.
They penetrate into his vitals and
wrench him all to pieces in their ef
forts to make their way through him.
Filled with anguish, he stops, clings
fiercely to the fence, and lifts up his
voice in frenzied agony. To some
extent his legs are paralyzed, and lie
is unable to move until the unfeeling
boot-juok comes hurling through the
air and stimulates him to action. He
then springs from the fence, his pains
vanish and his voice is silent. I not
this a complete and scientific expla
nation of the question that Imjs so long
defied the ablest scientific minds.—
We thus see how beautiful are the
reasoning processes by which true
science investigates abstruse ques
tions. We also see that one of the
most common incidents of every night
life is due to the electricity of the
earth. Let us, then, be thankful that
we live in a scientific age, and that
there are more uses tor electricity
than any one lias yet dreamed of.
** The Blues ”
Do you ever have the blues?”
asks a sufferer from that malady,
“and is there a cure for them?”
Certainly ; plenty of them; just as
there are for chills and fever, but in
like manner they yviil not always
work. We know one man who
walks off an attack, another who
rows it off, another who rides it off'
in the saddle. These are all dyspep
tics. The same prescriptions, aided,
perhaps, by lemon juice or diluted
nitromuriatic acid, often prove effect
ive in the case of bilious folks.
When the cause is, as it often is,-
nervous exhaustion, a good remedy
is cessation from all work, religious
and secular, plenty of sleep, and, if
tlitf constitution can bear it, cold wa
ter bathing. Always an ounce of
prevention is worth a pound of cure,
for it is not an easy task to fight off’
the blues. Misfortune, sorrow, indi
vidual temperament, and even the
accidents of wind and weather often
combine to weigh down the soui un
til, in extreme instances, insanity
may be the result. But there is no
rule to cure every one; each must
find out what is most effectual in his
own case, and persevere with it to
the end.
