It’s doubtful that every American l iknows how much the way we live today is iinfluenced by the life and thought of a jstatesman whose birthdate we observe 13 #' April. | That man is Thomas Jerfferson, third ^President of the United States. It was jin hifs lifetime, 1743 to 1826, that our • -nation came into being, and it was in •the work of his life, including .the Dec laration of Independence, that much of lour nation's future was formed. ! In 1774 he wrote that "...the same ;God that gave us life, gave us liberty |at the same time..." In that _ phrase, ifreedom is pictured as a God-given right jsomething that automatically belongs to ianyone who happens to be alive, j There was another side of Jefferson’s jthought, a view that lives today in our jsystem of free elections., In this view ifreedom is something that must be main jtained by democracy. In democracy, ev ieryone must use his vote, as a right and ias a duty. I For us as members of the Armed Forces, IThomas Jerfferson would point to an ex itra obligation to vote. As public ser vants, we are in his view committed to idefend our nation not only with missiles land bullets but with intelligent use of ithe free man’s weapon —his vote,. (AFPS) .....:...... ROAD TO PEACE „ New York has oftentimes been called j the Gateway to America. The Statue of ! Liberty rises out of New York harbor as j a symbol of freedom, offering security j and future happiness to thousands of im- j migrants arriving in the United States. j There are many people in foreign la- ; nds, however, who have no opportunity to j come to the United States, see our fan- i ous statue and enjoy the blessings she j symbolizes.. They gain their impressions of Amer- j ica from the actions of Americans in j their land.
