Only IS individuals in the world have i j previously encountered and survived th-j ; ese temperatures. These were the men who I wintered-over at the Amundsen-Scott IGY, | South Pole station last year. Coldest tractor repair job Bt The Seabees probably hold the record ^for the coldest tractor repair job in j history. The tractor, which can only I stay out 30minutes at these temperatures I before freezing,became inoperative while I carrying out empty fuel containers, jAfter ascertaining the diffinulty was in | the fuel line and that it had to be | cleaned and repaired, a relay system was jworked out. Tow of the men would take jparts into a garage to thaw them out, jparticularly gaskets, and then one would j run out and replace them. Fingers were \ frostbitten, as were toes, but .in a jlittle over an hour the tractor was I repaired and running. In all probability, the tractor would j have been out of commission until next ; summer. j — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — Eight years ago marked the first i observance of Armed Forces Day. U.S. NAVAL STATION Monday 19, May 1958 MASTER CHIEF PETTY OFFICER?? Authorization for the establishment of,pay grades E-8 and E-9 is expected j from Congress in the near future. Establishment of these pay grades will I enable the Navy to overcome some of the j stagnation that now exists in the E-7 I level by rewarding the better qualified j chiefs with additional advancement oppo- j rtunities. 1 E-8 or E-9 billets will be distributed j among all rating^.in proportion to the j number of petty'officers in each rating. 1 Candidates for advancement to E-8 or E-9 j will be required to be presently serving j as permanent appointment E-7. Candidates j for advancement to E-8 will be required j to have served four years service in pay j grade E-7 and have a total of 11 years j naval service. Candidates for advance- j ment to E-9 will be required to have se- j rved six years service in pay grade E-7 j and have a total of 13 years naval . service.In addition,all candidates must j be recommended by their commanding offi- j cer to compete in a regular service-wide i advancement examination.
