Horton, Jr;, USN, Commanding Officer,for 'their outstanding achievement in a RAWI N^ONDE observation in connection with scheduled operations and participation in the International Geophysical Year program. During a routine scheduled RAWINSONDE observation on 15 April 1958, the ballo on borne flight instrument was tracked by the ground measuring device(an AN/GMD i-lA) to the ultimate altitude of 152,822 [feet (about 29 miles). This was the max imum computed height to which the instr ument could be tracked as it reached the [pressure level of one millibar (the top Revel of the adiabatic chart) and the [lowest calibration, of the flight instru ment. According to Lieutenant Commander Ljames W. Ten Brink, USN, Naval Station ,Adak, Aerological Officer,it is believed (that this is the first time in which th is has been accomplished by any activity jin the RAWINSONDE observation program, jin average sounding usually terminates between 70,000 and 100,000 feet due to i (con’t on page 3)
