All but her young i est served in World War II, Her ’’middle : son,” Charles Anthony, was killed in j action on Iwo Jima. Her Husband was a disabled veteran of j World War I. j The 900 delegates to the convention, ! representing 34 departments,560 chapters ! and 23,300 members, established a new • department for Oklahoma yesterday. They also voted to ,ask congress to i increase the amount of monthly compensa ■ tion paid surviving members of deceased servicemen from ^75* to tlOO. The rising i cost of living was cited as requiring ! the boost. In other action,the Gold Star Mothers •; passed a resolution asking the Veterans | Administration to build chapels at 76 of | the VA’s 173 hospitals. Has the dog been j burying bones in your lima beans? j In a recent message from Antarctica, S reporting on gardening activities, there j was no mention whatsoever of any such I dufficulties. ^ Tow person’s stationed at Ellsworth j Station have been nursing a vegetable I garden for the past month in several j ; cubic feet of earth brought down with j i the help of a little commercial fertili- j | zer, the garden has flourished in open j i packing boxes in the warmth of the sci-j | ence building. The garden consists'of lettuce, rad- ! | ishes, peas, onions, carrots, tomatoes, j and lima beans. The radishes are the I ; most successful, producing bite size j ! roots, large stems and leaves, pink flo- j | wers, and finally seeds. The lettuce j ! was also successful with fair sized lea- i ves.
