1000,000 LAND
DEAL CLOSED BY
S J. COTTON CO
The largest single holding of culti
vated land in the Salt River valley
changed hands Thursday night, when
the Southwest Cotton company pur
chased tha(town of Marinette and
nearly 8000 acres of adjacent land
-from R. P. Davie of this city. The
total consideration was $1,000,000.
Rumors have been current here for
-a month that the big Davie tract was
to be sold, but the deal was not def
initely closed until midnight Thurs
day, when officials of the Southwest
Cotton company signed the papers at
the office of the Phoenix Title and
Trust company.
"We purchased the Marinette pro
ject because of the large acreage, be
cause it can be handled economically
in conjunction with our Litchfield op
erations, and because of the adaptabil
ity of the land to Pima cotton," Rob
ert C. Metzler, secretary and treasur
er of the Southwest Cotton company,
said yesterday afternoon. "This giv
es us a total acreage in the Salt River
valley of about 40,000 acres, of which
35,000 are under cultivation.
To Develop Property
"The development of the Davie
.property will go forward as rapidly
as possible, and we will probably con
struct at the town of Marinette a new
gw for the coming ginning season.
The entire town will be laid out anew
and modern dwellings will be con
structed for our employes.
"Options have been secured on
many pieces of land adjoining this
.property and some can logically be
purchased and made a part of the
.project proper. Those pieces falling
in this class will probably be pur
chased and developed very soon."
The Marinette property now owned
by the Southwest Cotton company
lies about the town of Marinette,
some 14 miles northwest of Phoenix,
on the Santa Fe, the railroad going
through the tract, thus assuring am
ple transportation facilities. The
property consists of more than 7500
acres, of which 6000 are in cotton.
Overcome Difficulties
The property is virtually an inde
pendent project in itself, its water
supply being pumped from drilled
wells on the property, the lift vary
ing from 30 to more than 100 feet,
according to location. The wells are
distributed, over the entire holdings,
and tap the Agua Fria basin. In cer
tain seasons considerable water is al
so taken from the Agua Fria by grav
ity by the Marinette canal, and waste
water also is obtained at times from
the Water Users' canal north of
Peoria, being siphoned under the
New River. '
Mr. Davie has held the Marinette
property about 12 or 13 years, it is
understood, and has received much
credit for the way im .which he has
developed the, big project in the face
of difficulties. Cultivation has been
carried on under the individual leas
ing system.
The Marinette propertyis but eight
miles from the Litchfield properties
of the Southwest Cotton company,
though hitherto not connected. The
announcement that the town of Mar
inette would be laid out anew was
considered last night as presaging an-

SMALL DEMAND IN STATE
FOR MEXICO CATTLE
DOUGLAS, May 12. During the
past two weeks several thwsand
head of i.altlo have been crossed from
Mexico at this port and tho stock is
now in nearby pastures awaiting the
appearance of purchasers. Cliff Rob
ertson purchased 1200 head of Mexi
can cattle 10 days ago and brought
them to pastures on this side of the
line. The Gabulondos brought across
1500 head yesterday and today Stew
art Hunt crossed 800. Smaller lots
have crossed to the United States
during the past two weeks.
Mr. Hunt stated today that there
seemed to be no demand for these
cattle and cave as a reason Hint in
the northern states, where these cat-
ue were generally desirable for pas
turing, there is an absence of grass.
He said that in the Sulphur Springs
valley there is abundance of errass.
but that not all the pastures and wat
er ana on that account grass is not
available for cattle. However, he
said, that the cattle could be cared, for
and that buyers would eventually
come and take them. He also said
that in Mexico, near the Douglas port
of entryj there is probably 15,000

Conversational Perils.
"Do you believe in reincarnation?"
"I'm glad you mentioned that!" ex

"Then you "have views on the sub

"Nothing decided. But it's one of
the few topics a can can bring up
nowadays without starting a danger
ous political argument."; Washington

"Do you suppose Senator Snort
worthy will have a niche in the hall
of fame?"
"I doubt if a niche would suit him,"
"Yes?"
"What he wants is a raised plat
form extending at least ten feet from
the wall." Birmingham Age-Herald.

the town of Litchfield is a model one

considered to have greater possibili

If FRANKLIN'S LEFT
CHEEK SWOLLEN, THE
W.S.S.JTMINE
Go to your safety deposit box and
look over your 1919 War Savings
stamps and peer carefully at the pic
ture of Benjamin Franklin. If there
is a swelling on the left cheek of the
venerable exponent of thrift so that
he looks as if he had a toothache,
your stamp is a counterfeit.
Because of the discovery of a clever
counterfeit, warning to examine 1919
War Savings stamps presented for re
demption has been broadcasted to all
postmasters on the Pacific coast by
the postoffice department, according
to C. O. Case, state chairman of the
war loan organization.
Printed from a steel plate on a good
grade of paper, the counterfeit stamp
shows the following defects:
Left cheek of Franklin has a pro
nounced swelling.
Lower one of twof left dots below
the portrait is comparatively indis
tinct. Vertical opening between the lines
in the lower left part of the numeral
"2" in "1924" is closed.
The chief of the United States sec
ret service at Washington has sent
specimens of the counterfeit to secret
service operatives throughout the
country, Postoffices in metropolitan
centers have been instructed to select
an employe of known exceptional abil
ities to acquaint himself with the
characteristics of the counterfeit and
to examine carefully ay stamps of the
1919 series presented for redemption,
says those registered before January
1, 1920, as the counterfeit was issued
after that date.
The 1920 series of War Savings
stamps is not affected, as they are an
entirely different issue, carmine in
color and carrying a reproduction of
a portrait of George Washington.
