the values increase as depth is gained
In addition to the deals made with
the Loring interest Burt Probasco
have also given a 30 day option on
the Gold Key group of claims td M
E McDonald representing Nety Ybrk
mining men The property adjoins
the Gold Chain estate on the north
west and carries several promising
fissures Mr McDonald left here a
few days ago for New York to close
the deal with his associates McDon
ald has followed em all from Cripple
Creek to the Pacific slope and from
the Arctic Circle to South America
As a mine manager and ore finder
he stands at the top of his profes
sion His opinion of the Katherine
district is therefore worthy pf careful
consideration He classes it as one
of thei most promising golfj bqaring
sections in the United States pd is
convinced that it will make good its
surface promise at depth
An interesting feature in connection
with the favorable light in which
Mjessrs Loring and McDonald view
the future of the Katherine district is
the favor it has found with other well
known mining engineers metallur
gists and miners Among them are

No more forceful illustration in jus
tification of their faith could be pre
sented than that offered at the Kath
erine Extension property where the
northeast continuation of the big
Katherine vein was recently encoun
tered at a depth of 100 feet At this
time the vein has been cut to a depth
of 40 feet and is carrying average
values of 647 a ton TheKatherine
Extension adjoins the bonanza Kath
erine mine and the discovery of the
Katherine vein therein proves its con
tinuity for a distance of more than a
nifo beyond the Katherine workings
The Katherine Extension will prob
ably be the next mine to come in in
the Katherine district with the Gold
Chains close second The discovery
of pay ore in the Gold Chain work
iflgs at the intersection of the Kath

cross vein on the property will prove
the strike of the Katherine vein

outcrops that are said to pan well in
gold Work is to be started within a
few days at the Treasure Vault group

FEDERAL MINES DEPARTMENT
Senator Nicholson of Colorado has
introduced in the senate a bill for the
creation of a department of mines and
to make that department a part of the
advisory cabinet of the president For
years a department of mines has been
sought for bv the mininer interests of
tie cquntry that heir interests might
do more closely guarded by the Na
tion but so far without success We
l ave departments of labor interior
agriculture and bureaus galore but
the most important of all resources of
the United States is allowed to shift
for itself and to fight its way against
every obstacle that can be thrown
against it by the big interests With
out mining the United States would
be an unimportant country it being
well known that withouf the freight
offerings of the mining industry there
would be few railroads in the Country
and no development of the west

potential dam in Black Canyon about

of the same importance in the develop
ment oi power as me impounding
dam the fall of the river being suf
ficiently great to make clearance be
tween the two sites By the construc
tion of the second dam the power de
developed would be practically double
This week handsomely colored phot
ographs of the Boulder Canyon dam
sito were forwarded to the president
by C D Wagner and Anson H Smith
with data covering this important pro
ject that the chief executive of the
Nation may have some idea of the
character and importance of the pro
ject and to enlist him in the work of
safeguarding this project and the
great Colorado river from the en
croachment of private interests The
building of dams and the diversion of
the waters of the river should be un
der federal control and not until the
demands of the government are satis
ftaA ciinnii interests be allow
ed to gain a foothold This stream
is an international one and state in
tovQoto Vine nn nlace in the projects
that will impound water or divert it
onto the lands The lact tnat me
rSwo Vms its orierin in the Wind River
mountains of western Wyoming or
southern Montana does not give to
nf fVio stntaa throueh which it
passes substantial rights tohe waters
of the stream no more so man uw
Arizona should garner every drop of
it as the whole body of water passes
through more than 300 miles of its
i l Anri fn nllnw states to par-
tition the waters of the river is ab
surd The Mexican government j
have some say in the distribution oi
the waters of the river although there
this position of the
is a dispute over
government of the sister republic
i vniH that thev may use as
much of the water as they see fit
and without consent oi me counwy
through which international waters
tun That Europe holds differently
on the subject as Germany Holland
France and Belgium have agreements
covering the use of the rivers that
course through their various terri
tories and each of these European
states recognize the rights of the oth
er no matter whether it is the state
wherein the waters have their source
or only course through them
But the one essential thing is to
build the dam and we believe that the
government will recognize the necess
ity for action and that the big under
taking will be under way within a
year As the lands that are now ly
ing below the dam are withheld from
entry there is reason to believe that
many thousands of ex service men will
be taken care of in that territory
