Tho Styles In Glass Eyes.
"We sell several hundred eyes a
jear," said a dealer yesterday, "and
send them as far as Portland, Ore.,
Denver, Col., and Lawrence, Kan. It
is a growing business, and it would
surprise you to know who some of my
customers arc. Eyesight is easily los't
a blow, an accident, a , Reverb cold
even, may destroy tho nerve, and then
tho surgeon removes tho ball, and I lit
tho counterfeit. I don't manufacture
these glas3 imitations, but import ex
clusively. American eyes arc-- mado
and sell at tho same figure as foreign
ones, but they aro not as fine by any
means. Tho most perfect eyes aro
mado in Thuringia, Germany, and havo
a more natural appcaranco than any
others. The iris is covered with silver,
and tho blood vessels with gold, and,
when properly inserted, thoy will movo
almost as readily as their natural com
panion. Of courso much deppnds upon
the condition of tho socket and the
state of tho muscles as left by tho sur
geon. "Our greatest troublo is the match
ing of eyes. The slightest difference in
tint Is very appreciable, and when you
remember that no two persons' eyes
are alike, you can imagine the difficul
ty we often have. Ilero is an eye be
longing to an old gent in Gormantown.
It is a special eye, and is left here as a
sample by which ho can order new
ones. You see, eyes wear out, their
life being about a year or a little over,
though occasionally I see one which
has lasted a much longer time. One
fentleman, who was hero this morning,
ad worn his eyo for fivo years, both
night and day. Tho salt and alkaline
'solutions of the tear-ducts, however,
havo an effect upon the surface of tho
glass, and eventually roughen it, so that
a new eye is necessary. Ono of my
customers, a lady, renews her eye about
every six months; here's her last ope,
you can seo how rough its surfaco'is,
and how its colors aro dimmed.
"It is quite an operation," tho dealer
went on, "to properly select and fit an
eye, but when onco you havo succeeded
tho owner suffers no pain or inconven
ience. Last month a gentleman camo
to mo for a left eye. I fitted him up
and then was astonished to bo soundly
berated because ho could not seo
through it. Ho had an idea that my
glass imitation was going to restore
fife to his destroyed optic nerve, and he
told me he had been thus informed by
his doctor. You seo this eye that be
longs to a young lady on liroad street,
audi havo no doubt that it has often
gazed tenderly Tnto tho orbs of many &
young gentleman. Tnero is somo ex-
Ercssion even in glass eyes. Thcro is a
luo one that goes to a lady in Iowa.
I'll venture the assertion that in a week
some young man will be peeping into
its depths and mentally believing that
he is reading the soul of tho fair owner.
Sho is pretty and lost her eye through
a premature explosion in one of her
lather's mines." Philadelphia Press.
Steaming aud Bending Wood.
In an address recently delivered by
Mr. H. G. Shepard, of New Haven,
Coriti., relative to tho use of wood in
carriage making, ho said that after a
piece of wood is bent its characteristics
undergo a considerable change. Tho
wood is heavier, and its fibers have be
come interlaced ; it will sustain mora
fircssuro and strain than straight wood
n the same directions, either across oi
with graiu. Ho said : A piece of tim
ber that has been steamed, whether it
is bent or not, has its stillness increas
ed. It is moro brittle than it was be
fore, and for some uses it will do as
well, and yet there is a quality that the
steaming process and tho kiln drying
process affect very much the same; they
both cook the gum in tho timber and
niako it brittle and stiff. Thero is a
grado or class of hickory that is benefit
ed by being steamed or kiln dried for
uo as spokes or whiflietrees. Thero if.
a kind of hickory that never bocomes
stiff by a natural process of drying, and
ono of the desirable qualities of a spoke,
rim, or wbiflletree is stiffnew as well as
strength: you take that hickory and it
is tho very best wo havft and steam it,
and it is better fitted for theso purposes
than it was before. It is difficult to tear
apart a piece of bent wood ; the libera
aro interwoven, one with tho other. Wo
do not perceivo the chango on tho out
tide, but when wo coino to split the
stick open we find that its character i
If a man begins to save against Ids
old age, wo call it thrift, and praise him
as a small capitalist who is giving hos
tages to fortune; but if a dog accumu
lates a store of bones or food, wo look
upon him as indulging in dangerous
caprices, which may end in tho neces
sity of putting a bullet through his
head. Thero may bo exceptions hero
and there. Sometimes you will find
an old lady who will protect eccentric
ity in a parrot, a magpie, orajackdaw,
as a bird that has a right to a certain
freedom of movement in return for its
entertaining attempts at conversation.
But, on tho whole, thero is no sterner
standard of conventionality than that
which we enforco on our domestic ani
mals. Pet dogs becomo perfect bigots
In favor of tho usual, and persecuto
any attempt to deviate from it on tho
part oven of a moro powerful and less
favored colleague, as tho Inquisition
persecuted heresy, or as tho court of
Kussia persecutes Nihilism. There is
nothing equal to tho indignation of an
in-doors dog at any invasion of tho
privacy of tho drawing-room by an out
doors dog, and nothing more melan
sholy than the servile apologies which
tho big dog will mako to tho littlo one,
for oven proposing to break through
the animal ctiquetto of tho house.
