COMMUNICATIONS From the surrounding country of local in terest solicited, W. F. White, Passenger Traffic Man ager of the Santa Fe and Atlantic & Pacific railways, has caused the follow ing announcement to be posted along both lines: The management of the Santa Fe route, desirous of increasing the busi ness of the company, and also of fur thering the prosperity of those whose homes are in the territory served by its fines, has organized an Industrial De partment whose object will be to assist so far as it can properly do so, in the development of local resources and the establishment of new industries at points where f.-vorable opportunities | for such industries exist. It will not I take any financial interest in the pro j posed industries, as it wili have no ! money to invest nor cash to contrib ute, nor will it foster or favor any prop osition which does not rest upon a sound business basis; but it is proposed to co-operate with the people in any le gitimate enterprise favored by local conditions, and to that end solicits cor respondence. Communications should be addressed to Jas. A. Davis, Indus trial Commissioner, Great Northern hotel, Chicago. There are two industries that could be established in Winslow which could be built up, under favorable conces sions by the railroad company, to con siderable magnitude. One is the man ufacture of brick and the othercement works. It is a well established fact that Winslow brick is far superior to 'U-kJ vi-vU r.. tdo in liie southwest. With favorable freight rates they could and would be shipped in both direc tions from this point inconsiderable quantities. There is a large and almost inex haust ibie deposit of gypsum here that wi he ' a cement equal to any manufac iurod iu tho United States, it has been ' ■ ted and proven, so that this is not a mere assertion, but an established fact. Now let our citizens take advantage of this offer, get together, work in har mony, and try to do something to build up the town. It is to the interest of every one who is business here, or who owns property here, to put his shoul der to the wheel and push these enter prises along. They may be small, but they will bo starters, and others are sure to follow. Bradstreet’s last weekly report says* Wuh the exception of reports from a •dozen south Atlantic coast and Gulf l ies, jobbers at nearly all distribut ing centers say that business is dull end without new features. The demand is improved at Chicago and St. Louis for hats, hardware, shoes and dry goods, but the trade in these lines is fair only- Cold weather has stimulated purchases of clothing at some points. Littiegon : eral recovery from holiday dulness is ! reported as yet. At most centers sales | men are just starting out. Collections ! are reported unsatisfactory, but in ! many instances merchants express | themselves as hopeful of a goodspring I business. The week’s total of business I failures iu the United States is 488, one of the largest ever reported. This is ; contrasted with 325 in the last week of with 446 in the first week of 1896, 405 in the corresponding week of 1895 and 484 in 1894. The value of tho mineral output of ! Arizona, including gold, silver, lead, j copper and limestone, for the last year ;is fixed at $13,978,233. The mining in dustry of the territory is in its infancy as yet. There are more good undevel oped claims of gold, silver and copper in Arizona than any other state oi* ter ritory in the Uifion. When they aro made producers this territory will take the front rank in the output of prec ious metals. Arizona’s banks and business men are doing business on a solid founda- S rion. While banks are failing and busi [ nes3 houses are closing their doors ail I over the cast, there bus not been a fail ure in our territory. ; Oar old friend A. F. Banta has sus | pended the publication of the Popu | list and commenced that of the Pick and Drill. The Lrß Vegas Optic says: it is un derstood that the Santa Fe manage ment intends to secure control of the Atlantic & Pacific line, after the fore closure sale, and a standard in tlri dif ferent grades of work will then be es labliebed on that road: | Official Proceedings OF TEE ■ Board of Spvisors OF Navajo County.
