Congressman J. W Gaines of Tennessee, has just discovered a law which has been reposing peacefully in the Washington Museum since 1856. and which is to the effect that §13.50 shall be deducted for each day that a Congressman is absent from the House of Representatives. And Mr. Gaines has the audacity to think that the law should be en- j forced. The Salton Sea Levees. , Contrary to an impression t hat has gained currency, says a special dispatch from Yuma, the repair work of the South ern Pacific to the the levees along the Colorado river below Yuma will be of the most per manent type. There are about twenty miles of levee along tlie California side’beginniug at a point mid way between Yuma and the in take and extending some dis tauce along the Imperial dam. It is a break in this levee that caused the recent trouble. I The railroad company sent a train loaded with eight pile drivers and a lot of men and teams last Sunday to assist the big army of labores already on on the ground. Church Notes.
