Page 2 The Winslow Mail OFFICIAL COUNTY AND CITY PAPER AN INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPER Published Every Saturday: Mail B’ld'g THE BAUER COMPANY, Prop. $3 the year The Postal Laws require that subscrip tions be paid m advance. Entered at the Winslow Postoffice as second class mail mat ter. Saturday, MaV 13, 1911. great destructiou LI 1 that has befallen the cotton industry of the South through the boll weevil serves as a warning to those portions of the West that are being endangered thru the j alfalfa lead weevil which has wrought great damage to the alfalfa producing sections in the 'dcinity of Salt Lake City, U tah. The known instances of the spread of this great pest in Colorado and other sections of the country has emphasized the necessity of something being done that will insure the checking of the alfalfa leaf weevil before it is too late. The Boards of Trade of Phoenix and Mari copa County have sent mem orials to Congress to meet the enemy of alfalfa, and it is recited in the document that i2o,oqp acres is devoted to alfalfa in Arizona. Os this 65,000 acres is in the Salt River irrigation project of the United States Reclamation Service. On a basis of $l5O an acre, the investment in Arizona is shown to be suffic iently large to warrent care beuig taken to prevent harm falling to the industry. It is said in relation to the alfalfa leaf danger through direct flight is not great and if the pest can be isolated, its spread may be prevented. The real danger, however, most feared, is that the weevil will be carried in railroad cars starting from the affected district in Utah, aud thus carry the weevils into the interior of other alfalfa regions. As the transporta tion from Utah is directed largely into the vicinity of the alfalfa fields of Kansas, this latter section is in con siderable danger. The warn ing issued by the Arizona people, if heeded, will no doubt eventually save the alfalfa interests of the country many millions of dollars in the destruction of crops, WHY NOT EFFECT an organization of our business fraternity and men of capital. The idea is to keep the present interest of our town at high tide and awaken new enterprises that will add to its growth and pros perity. This is a move in the right direction and the only way such a thing can be ef fected. We already see what new and live enterprises will do for us. There are many live industries, especially in the east, that are seeking lo cations in the west, and if we were properly organized into a Business Men’s Association, these enterprises couM be looked into, and if found to be meritorious, sufficient in ducement given for them to locate within our border. This will give growth and prosperity, new life and new interest, make our city the place that it was destined to be, the first, the best and the ! most notable of all in this ; part of the territory. The I presentation of this subject is not for mere effect, but for a purpose; for the consideration of every business man of this city, to awaken you from that j slumber aud arouse you to thinking on this subject with a view to speedy action. 1 ! JTTHE UTILITY OF THE LI 1 aeroplane for defensive or offensive purposes in war is to be given a test this I week when C. N. Anderson, ■one of the best marksmen in | America, will ascend to the height of several hundred feet and shoot at glass balls to be thrown by the aviator. And erson has come to Washing ton and the test will be made at Bennings track southeast of the city. A number of sportsmen and army and navy men are taking great interest in the experiment. Five or six Curtiss machines of the latest type will be in the air and Glenn Curtiss himself with other profession al aviators will steer them. Commenting on the propo sition of naming a national park in Arizona after Mr. Carnegie,a Washington news paper facetiously remarked, that it would be a great relief to find something besides the libraries called after the fam ous Scotchman. A Kansas representative recently introduced a bill pro hibiting chorus girls from wearing skirts too short to reach the patella. At the first reading of the bill the Clerk was immediately asked to furnish each member of the house with a dictionary. lowa took a long time to break the senatorial deadlock, but did a good job of it in the end. One might think, judging from results, that it had studied the Illinois methods and then had tried to see how different it could act. Wellington aud Nepoleou are the names of two towns in the same county in Kansas and now midway between them the town of Waterloo has been founded. Blue is said to be the strongest eye and gray the next. Yet when it comes to enabling a man to see double “red eye” has them both beaten out of sight. Why not abolish the umpire and have direct decisions by the people at baseball games? Is there no progressiveness in Baseballdom? The chief difference between the men who “own the earth” and others is that the others want to and can’t. The congressmen will also have to explain to his con stituents why those garden seeds didn’t sprout. \ Iu conformity with our re quest Mexico is taking its in surrection out of range. £ Bids Wanted For Kewanee d System of Water Supply Sealed bids will be received at the office of the Board ol Super ' ; visors of Navajo County at Hol =; brook, until 2:30 p m , July 3rd, 1 1 1911, for the Kewanee System 1 1 of Water Supply for the use of . ■ forty people, and the same sys j tern for the use of twenty people.
