SPECIAL MEETING TOWN COUNCIL A special meeting of the Town Council was held Monday evening which was called for the sole pur pose of discussing a certain bill for steel furnished by contractors in building the addition to the city Jail. It was at first thought by the Council that the bill was ex cessive, but upon thoroughly look ing into the matter they found the same reasonable and ordered the bill paid. At this meeting Geo. H. Keyes, Jr., of the Bank of Winslow,' was appointed a member of the Council in place of E. F. Tarr, who resigned re cently on account of not being able to attend regularly, The following is a three months report of the business transacted by the Council, including receipts and disbursements: Report of all monies received and disbursed by the Town Clerk. Highest score was made by Mrs. Robert Powell, after which an elaborate supper was cpjoyed. The table was adorned by an embroidered centerpiece on which was a tall cut-glass vase filled with chrysanthemums, also red candles in silver candelabra on the buffet. Covers were laid for Mesdames Gibson, Ratelle, Daze, Dadey, Powell, Kaufman, Keyes and Cornelius. Mrs. V. R. Rose arrived home this week from her visit at the State Fair and a visit with her son Jack at Prescott where the latter is attending school. THE WINSLOW MAIL FLAGSTAFF ASKS FREEJ)ELIVERY W. P. Geary, chairman of the State Corporation Commission and Clerk Jack Gavin arrived in town Tuesday coming from Flag staff where a hearing was called by the commission of the Wells Fargo Express Company regard ing a free express delivery in Flagstaff such, as we have in j Winslow. The representatives for the express company were J. M. Williams and C. E. Blaine the agent for the company at Flag staff. The representative mon in behalf of the free delivery were J. W. Francis and Prof. R. H. Bloome of the Flagstaff Normal. After a rather lenghty hearing it was decided that the matter would have to be put before all the members of the Corporation Commission for final dicision, which will no doubt result in a free delivery of express in Flag staff. Mayor F. T. LaPrade received a communication this week from Immigration Commissioner W. H. Clark to the effect that Prof. A. M. McOmie of the Agricultu ral Experiment Station of the University of Arizona accompan ied by other Professors of that insitution will give lectures to the people of Holbrook and vici nity on various methods of farm ing on the 26th of this month. The program as outlined for Hol brook is a good one and should be very interesting to all who are engaged in farming of what ever nature. The Professors are travelling in a special car and when they leave Holbrook it is their intention to return to Tuc son. In order that the Winslow ites may get an opportunity to hear some of these instructive lectures it was decided to have these men give a lecture for two hours between train time in their car on the morning of the 27th if suitable arrangements can be made here in Winslow. More information regarding this mat ter will be given in our next week’s issue. Mrs. Donald Lewis of Adama na visited with Mrs. E. H. Un derhill during the week. T. K. Seeger, proprietor of the Winslow Laundry and manager of the Electric Theatre has re cently purchased the auto form erly belonging to Dr. F. H. Waite which he is at present having thoroughly overhauled by the auto doctor B, P. Kiddoo. Mrs. Ed Clark accompained by her son “Buddy” and the baby are visiting here at the present time with Mr. Clark and friends. Mrs. J. F. Briscoe now of Los Angeles, is visiting here at pres ent with friends. W. S. O’Brien of Los Angeles is a business visitor' in town this week. The Altar Society met at the j home of Mrs. J. Hickey Nov. 7. After the business matters were dispensed with cards and £ dain ty lunch were enjoyed. Those ! present were: Mesdames Dadey, I Drumm,Giles, Goldsworthy, Kel j ley, Moore, Spellmire, Uphoff, ■ Woods, Wyriek and Young. The I guests were: Mrs. Chas. Daze and Mrs. Frank Chadeck. Next meeting will be held at Mrs. A. Tanner’s Dec, sth. Miss Jessie Crossen of Kenova, West Verginia, sister of Mrs. Alex. Erench of this city in ! forms us that he has recently in corporated his gypsum claims of which he had some 4,(MX) acres located under the mining laws of this state, (he new company to be known as the “Navajo Gypsum and Fertilizer Co. ’ ’ with a capa talization of $100,000,00 at $1.06 per share. None of the stock will be offered for sale. The men in terested in the company are F. M. French and Martin Dadey of city, C. N. Cotton of Gallup and Leo D. Daze of Los Angeles, a relative of the local Daze’s. Mr. French has been working on these claims since spring build ing roads and houses and shipping 1 gypsum to Los Angeles and vici nity until now their output of j that material is about two car-j loads daily. A spur was put in on the claims, also narrow-guage and dump cars are used in handl ing the commodity to transfer it directly into the cars. Large crushers and screeners of 100 ton capacity have been installed to grind and screen the gypsum which is put into sacks to be used for plaster ami fertilizer. Considering the large holdings of the company and the unlimited amount of Gypsum it contains it will surely be a big thing for the men interested and for the good of Winslow in particular. The market for gypsum is getting better every year and the demand is Increasing wonderfully and the company may at some later date be obliged to put up large mills and work a large force of men to meet the demand, for their com modity. Fields, accompained by her daughter Ora and son Earnest arrived home this week from their visit with relatives and friends in the southern part of the State. . /; Mr. Phillip Avery, the genial and affable assistant at the Wig warn, entertained a few freinds at a “game breakfase” during the week, “Phil” was ably as sisted by Messrs. Showalter and Gregory. Julius Wetzler of Holbrook has this week made arrange ments whereby he will buy a large number of cattle from J. W. Marley which will be turned over to him to-day. Mr. Wetzler has bought considerable cattle in this vicinity for the last month and is shipping them to Phoenix where he is putting them in pasture prior to putting them on the Los Angeles markets. D, Raley vieited the High School. Dr. . Merrit gave an address upon the |t sree essentials for success: Men tal, Moral and Physical develop ment. I Mr. Raley in comparing the : Vinslow High School with other schools in the state said, “I think j Winslow has a fine high school.! I It compares most favorably with larger and older schools.” Tuesday afternoon the Rev. Mr. Adkinson, of Los Angeles, and State Supt., of Missions, gave a 1 short address to the students and i teachers at the High School. He earnestly urged higher wim ;, for all. , The Rev. Ross of this city also , made a few remarks, and prom t j?ed to talk some time soon. ; Miss Cavanagh, High School teacher of English and Spanish; ! was absent from High School the j early part of the week with a severe attack of la grippe; also Miss Whillock, grade 7 was ilKon Wednesday a. m. Nov. 13. The Takie n artie given by the Commercial students in the Com mercial rooms last Friday was a great success from g social point of view. B, T., has been conducting regular practices in the Gymnasium and at the Opera House. H. S. is ad vancing rapidly. Class meetings appear to follow one another in rapid succession. Something must be in the wind. The United States Weather Observatory instruments haw been transferred to the H. S. and the Science Instructor Miss Powell appointed Official Observr. Ross were enjoyed by all members of the Commercial Class. Since they have added a new; row of seats in the back of the | Assembly room the teachers have been very bothered by the stu dents. They all seem to want the hack seats. The next term of school Irene Dadey will be ready to take Miss Snyder’s place as Commercial teacher. Miss Cavanaugh our English teacher has not been to school for a while on account of a severe cold, but was able to continue! teaching Wednesday. Our singing did not progress j as well as usual Wednesday morn-1 ing Mr. Cornelius being absentj during that period.
