His father was an agricultural la borer and died when the boy was three years old. Morris was apprenticed to a cobbler and followed his trade in this country until 1871, when, at the age of seventy-nine, he emigrated to America. The old man is very proud of the fact that he has lived In three cen turies. He remembers the union of Great Britain and Ireland, the assassi nation of President Lincoln and the laying of the first Atlantic cable. Morris can still walk with the aid of a stick and see with the aid of spectacles, which he first purchased after passing his hundredth birthday. His hearing is good, and he enjoys a cup of tea or coffee with each meal. — Daily Express. South America has the most sxtensive and most varied avi-fauna all the continents. On the other aand, its mammalian fauna, although very interesting, is rather poor in number of species and individuals and in the size of the beasts. It possesses more) mammals that are unique and listinctive in type than does any other continent save Australia; and they are if higher and much more varied types :han in Australia. But there is noth ng approaching the majesty, beauty ind swarming mass of the mammalian ife of Africa and, in less degree, of iropical Asia; indeed, it does not even Approach the mammalian life of North America and northern Eurasia, poor :hough this is compared with the seething vitality of tropical life in the ild world. Until a geologically recent period, a period extending into that which saw man spread over the world in substantially the physical and cul tural stage of many existing savages, South America possessed a varied and striking fauna of enormous beasts — saber-tooth tigers, enormous lions, mastodons, horses of many kinds, namel-like pachyderms, giant ground sloths, mylodons the size of the rhi noceros, and many, many other strange md wonderful creatures. From some cause, concerning the nature of which we cannot at present even hazard a guess, this vast and giant fauna van ished completely, the tremendous catastrophe -(the duration of which is unknown)- not being consummated un til within a few thousand, or a few score thousand years.
