Food Pledge of Arizona Women
Herewith is the food fpledge for Arizona women, which all are urged to sign and mail to the State Council of Defense, Phoe nix, Arizona: I am glad to join in the exer cise of food conservaation for our nation and hereby accept membership in the United States Food Administration, pledging myself to carry out the direc tions and advice of the food ad ministration in the control of my household. Name Street City Occupation Breadwinner Number in household Do you employ a cook Have you a garden Fruit....or Vegetable Will you take partin author ized neighborhood movements... Sign How you can help save. First, to save the wheat: one wheatless meal a day, using corn bread or other cereal as a sub stitute. Second, to save meat: One meatless day a week. Buy less and serve smaller portions. Third, to save butter fats: To use no butter in cooking. Three times the necessary fats are con sumed in cooking. Fourth, to save transportation: By eating home products and so release freight cars for other uses. Fifth, to preach the “gospel of the clean plate.” To buy less food stuffs. To skimp the gar bage can. Sixth, to increase the use of corn, buckwheat, rice, rye and of all vegetables, in order to save on wheat, meat and butter fats, to preserve and store any sur plus for winter use. Pursuant to the national move ment for food conservation, Her bert Hoover, head of the United States Food Administration Com mission, is calling upon every patriotic Arizona family to aid in saying food stuffs. If you wish to join with hun dreds of thousands of loyal Amer icans in helping to win the war, cut out the above pledge, fill it in and mail it to the State Coun cil of Defense at Phoenix. Then live up faithfully to the promises you have made, and get others to do so. Women Not Wanted. A soldier’s bride has been re turned to this country from France. It seems that just prior to the departure of the first con signment of soldiers to the front, a sergeant was married, and by having her hair cut short and dressed in full regulation khaki, she managed to accompany her husband across the waters. Her masquerading was short lived, and the officers sent her back home. It is said the soldier was once stationed in Arizona, and as no names are mentioned it carries the presumption the lady was an Arizona girl. Potatoes and Onions. In the Sacramento valley in California it is said potatoes and onions are rotting in the field, because the growers are unable to get profitable prices. The growers are offering the potatoes for SI.OO per hundred and the onions for 63c per hundred, which would indicate there was no necessity for people to go hungry if there was some sys tem of distribution from the grower to the people.
