THE PHOENIX TRIBUNE—ALWAYS IMPROVING \ TUGSON | (By S. E. Newell) I ! The Sunday services were attended I by appreciative audiences in both the |A. M. E. and the Baptist churches. Everybody was glad to see the church j es fling wide their doors, and welcome \ the members and friends once more I after nine weeks’ vacation on account iof influenza. | A very successful quarterly confer j ence was held by Rev. Allen at the |A. M. E. church on Monday, Dec. 9. The pastor of Mt. Calvary Baptist i church called the deacons in an offi ! cial board meeting on the 9th inst. Ifor the purpose of getting a line on the work. In this meeting it was i found that Deacon H. Banks had been constantly on the alert in trying to keep life in the financial side of the work. Mrs. Lura Alexander is enjoying some happiness now because her sis- I ter is visiting her from Seattle, Wash. I am sure there are few persons j more happy than is Mr. Creed Taylor ! and his wife. This new bride had 1 kindly consented to give up the joy and happiness of married life while her husband answered the nation’s call to military- duties. They had been married just a few days when the two found it necessary to release themselves from all ties. That he would stand free to go at the nation’s bidding, Mrs. Taylor went back to Ok lahoma City, and accepted her teach ing position until the schools were or dered closed. She then gave her time and service to hospital work. As soon as peace was declared, she resigned her position and returned to Tucson, where she is now filling the exalted place of an ideal housewife. He may [i get over it, but he will never look the t same. ' i Mrs. Martha Johnson Lee, wife of 1 Corporal William H. Lee, has just re- ! ceived official mail which brought * much sunshine into her life. When 1 the postman stopped at her door the 1 other day and presented to her a let ter, upon owning it she found her al lotment from the government in the form of a check for SBO. This amount was two months’ pay for herself and baby. Her heart was so thrilled with joy and gladness, that, while her moth er was at work many blocks away, f Mrs. Lee rushed to the telephone and - took down the receiver and called for ( her mother, and began to tell her the I good news and glad tidings of great joy. The mother, Mrs. Katie Johnson, did as aH good mothers should, ad- 1 vised that the greater portion of this money be left in the bank. This kind J of advice would be helpful to many of our folk—let’s spend some and save 1 some. Mrs. W. T. Robinson, president of the B. Y. P. U.. is now beginning to arrange the Christmas program. We ' take the authority to extend an invi- ’ tation to one and all —yes, be sure 1 to witness the Christmas entertain ment at Mt. Calvary. This is where the folk do things. The date of en tertainment will be mentioned later. There is a certain Baptist minister who is constantly being called upon to solemnize the rite of matrimony between couples. One certain lady asked another Just a few days ago: “I wonder when is our pastor going > to get married himself?” The other ; S lady answered, “He will doubtless get j 1 married as soon as he can find some- ' body to have him.” I am sure we will all agree with this statement, as it < is in violation of the law for a man to marry a woman without her consent. 1 i i They will sure get him for kidnapping, j We are looking forward to a great day jin Tucson on January 1. The rendi tion of a very high-class program is anticipated by the Negroes of this city. Our attention is now being called to the millions of people in the lfberated nations, who are now at our mercies. o | DOUGLAS | (By G. R. Kirby) ■ On last Sunday evening, December 8, Rev. G. R.
