ON WAY TO HIS TRIAL
ORANGE, Tex. —Frank Wilkes, col
ored, who was likely to be freed of
a charge of murder for which he
was under a death sentence, was
shot to death by white officers last
week while being taken to Newton
for trial.
Although the officers declared they
shot their prisoner w T hen he attempt
ed to escape, he wore handcuffs
when his lifeless body was brought
